My 3 answers (3 prongs) • Chillingworth wants to study Dimmesdale’s soul as well as his body • Chillingworth tries over and over to convince Dimmesdale that divulging secrets is better than keeping them inside • Chillingworth believes that Dimmesdale’s physical decline is being caused by a sickness of his soul brought about by keeping secrets
For each point, you need evidence: use an example to prove your claim • Point • Supportive example • (can be a direct quote/paraphrase or summary) • Point • Supportive example • (can be a direct quote/paraphrase or summary) • Point • Supportive example • (can be a direct quote/paraphrase or summary)
1st Point: Chillingworth wants to study Dimmesdale’s soul as well as his body. • p. 84 – “As not only the disease interested the physician, but he was strongly moved to look into the character and qualities of the patient.” • p.120-- “He now dug into the poor clergyman’s heart, like a miner searching for gold.” • p. 116 – “He deemed it essential, it would seem, to know the man, before attempting to do him good.” Which example do YOU think would best support the point? Which one would you use?
2nd Point: Chillingworth tries over and over to convince Dimmesdale that divulging secrets is better than keeping them inside. • p. 122 – “ ‘Why should not the guilty ones sooner avail themselves of this unutterable solace?’” • p. 123 – “ ‘If they would serve their fellow-men, let them do it by making manifest the power and reality of conscience, in constraining them to penitential self-abasement!’” • p. 121 – “…‘some hideous secret that was buried with him, and which he had done better to confess during his lifetime.’” • p. 123 Chillingworth says, “These men deceive themselves. They fear to take up shame that rightfully belongs to them.” Which example do YOU think would best support the point? Which one would you use?
3rd Point: Chillingworth believes that Dimmesdale’s physical decline is being caused by a sickness of his soul. • p. 116 – “Wherever there is a heart and an intellect, the diseases of the physical frame are tinged with the peculiarities of these” • p. 126 – “A bodily disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part” • p. 127 – “ ‘A rare case!’ he muttered. ‘I must needs look deeper into it. A strange sympathy betwixt soul and body!’” Which example do YOU think would best support the point? Which one would you use?
Sample of a correctly used quote to support one prong of a 3 pronged response Italicized wordsrepresent my ideas – non italicized quotes in black are quoted from the text – they are Hawthorne’s ideas. RULE: More of you ! Chillingworth is baffled by Dimmesdale’s ailments; he tells Dimmesdale “ ‘A rare case!’ he muttered. ‘I must needs look deeper into it. A strange sympathy betwixt soul and body’” (Hawthorne 127). Chillingworth believes Dimmesdale’s physical symptoms are related to what is going on in his mind. So of course Chillingworth wants to learn about the trouble in Dimmesdale’s soul, because he is suspicious that he has guilt about being Pearl’s father.

Sample full answer with direct quotes (Paragraph)How does Hawthorne show readers Chillingworth’s suspicions that Dimmesdale is a co-conspirator in adultery? Chillingworth suspects Dimmesdale of being a co-conspirator in Hester’s crime of adultery, although Dimmesdale’s parishoners have no idea; they think Dimmesdale has an illness that a doctor needs to treat with constant observation and perhaps medicine. But, Chillingworth chooses not to medicate him with elixirs; he says he first must study Dimmesdale’s soul “like a miner searching for gold” (Hawthorne 120). He tries over and over to convince Dimmesdale that divulging secrets is better than keeping them inside. Chillingworth tells Dimmesdale that men who hold secrets “deceive themselves ”(123). He says they are afraid of the shame that will come with telling the truth (123). Ultimately, Chillingworth believes that Dimmesdale’s physical decline comes from a sickness of his soul which is the result of keeping secret his role in Hester’s sin of adultery. He tells Dimmesdale, “Wherever there is a heart and an intellect, the diseases of the physical frame are tinged with peculiarity of these”(116). Stubborn Dimmesdale tenaciously argues with him on the idea of confessing sin, and ultimately does not confess, although his physical appearance suggests his obvious guilt. Dimmesdale’s guilty conscience appears consistently throughout the story to both the reader and the leech. Incorporating Quotes into WritingPoints to Remember: 1) When incorporating direct quotations to support an argument, remember to introduce the quote by explaining the speaker, who the speaker is talking to and in what context, or by explaining how the quote relates to the point you are trying to make. If you are quoting dialogue or another passage that the author has already placed in quotation marks, the student must replace the author’s double quotes with single quotes. Or, just use an ellipses to avoid it all together. Example of a direct quotation where the narrator is the speaker: Pearl is often mischievous, causing her mother much concern when she responds to Wilson that she had not been made at all, but had been “plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses …by the prison door” (Hawthorne 76). Hester is worried that the governor will take Pearl away from her if Pearl does not demonstrate what she knows about God. Example of a direct quotation which includes original quotation marks from the author: Chillingworth is baffled by Dimmesdale’s ailments. “ ‘A rare case!’ he muttered. ‘I must needs look deeper into it. A strange sympathy betwixt soul and body’” (Hawthorne 127)! Chillingworth believes in the connection of body and soul. He is obsessed with discovering the trouble in Dimmesdale’s soul, which Chillingworth is convinced is the cause of Dimmesdale’s physical illness. Example of a direct quotation which includes original quotation marks from the author and an ellipses so that the student doesn’t need to worry about triple quotes. Chillingworth is baffled by Dimmesdale’s ailments when he tells Dimmesdale “ A rare case!.....I must needs look deeper into it. A strange sympathy betwixt soul and body” (Hawthorne 127)!
