Understanding and Improving the Impact of Neighbourhood Watch
Impact “Demonstrating that a change has taken place as a result of some activity”
What sorts of Impact can we measure? Perceptions and experience of crime • Fear of crime • Levels of victimisation • Confidence in the police
Perception of Crime 7. In the past year do you think crime levels in your neighbourhood have? • Increased • Remained stable • Decreased • Don’t know 8. In general, how satisfied are you with your personal safety from crime? • Very satisfied • Satisfied • Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied • Dissatisfied • Very Dissatisfied • Don’t know
What sorts of Impact can we measure? Neighbourliness • Willingness of communities to act together • Feelings of belonging to the local area • Perceptions of the local area • Levels of loneliness
What sorts of Impact can we measure? Diversity and reach of Neighbourhood Watch • Age range • Ethnic background • Accommodation type • Income levels
How can the Impact Assessment Tool help me? • Understand what local people think about the area they live in and what concerns • Show any difference between the perception and experience of those who are members of NW or live in a NW area and those who don’t • Demonstrate the benefit of being a member of Neighbourhood Watch and encourage more people to join • Evidence to funders and partners that Neighbourhood Watch is effective • Inspire coordinators by showing them they have made a positive impact
What needs to be in place for NW to make an Impact? NW needs to be present in the communities that have concerns NW needs to be active in those communities NW activity and communications need to be relevant to local concerns and appropriate for the local community
