Nehemiah 13:23-24 – language revealed that the Jews had intermarried with gentiles & were failing to keep the nation separate from outside influences. • Matthew 26:73 – your speech betrays you. Peter claimed one thing, but his speech revealed something else. He had a Galilean dialect (Mark 14:70).
1 Peter 4:11 – “If anyone speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.” • When we encourage, exhort, instruct & rebuke, we are to do so with God’s own words.
“Fellowship” • KOINONIA – appears 19 times in the NT & is variously translated “participation,” “communion,” “fellowship,” “partnership,” & even “contribution” as in a monetary gift. • God & His Son (1 John 1:3) • Holy Spirit (Phil. 2:1) • One another (1 John 1:7)
“Fellowship” • Unity & Working Together - 1 John 1:7; 2 Cor. 6:14-16 • Acceptance & Endorsement - Gal. 2:9 • Contribution - Rom. 15:26 • Sharing & Supporting - Phil. 4:14-15 (communicate KJV, shared NKJV).
“ministry” • DIAKONIA – “service, ministry; of religious & spiritual ministration.”
“ministry” • Deacons - the word for deacon is DIAKONOS - 1 Tim 3 • Apostles - Acts 1:17, 25, 6:4, 2 Cor. 5:18, 1 Tim. 1:12 • Preaching - 2 Tim. 4:5 • Service to the Church - Eph. 4:12
“Grace” • CHARIS – “unmerited favor.” Something given to man by God, not based on man’s merit to deserve, but on God’s pleasure to grant the gift.
“Grace” • Salvation - Eph. 2:8-9 • Power To Equip For Ministry - Rom. 1:5, 12:6, 1 Cor. 3:10, Eph. 3:2, 7 • God’s Grace Teaches & Brings Understanding - Titus 2:11-12
“Saint” • HAGIOS –From a family of words “holy,” “sanctified,” & “sacred”. • “As used of believers, it designates ALL such & is NOT applied merely to persons of exceptional holiness, or to those who, having died, were characterized by exceptional acts of ‘saintliness’” (Vine’s).
“Saint” • Sainthood is not an attainment; it is a state into which we are called (1 Cor. 1:2). • A Christian is set apart from the world for God’s special use (1 Peter 2:5, 9). • “A peculiar people” – a special treasure; a people in a purse (Exo 19:5; Deut 7:6; 14:2; Psa 135:4).
Make sure your choice of words suggest the meaning God intended. fellowship, ministry, grace, saint.
