Lenina is Depressed • Henry Foster asks Lenina if she’s going to a feely in the evening, which she is not • Henry presses the matter, suggesting a “Pregnancy Substitute” or a “V.P.S.” and Lenina tells him to “shut up” • Lenina feels like she has enough “V.P.” on her own
Fanny • Fanny has a talk with Lenina about her “obsession” with John • Fanny tries to persuade her to try more guys or some “soma” • Lenina states that she already has, but it doesn’t work. She only wants John • Fanny asks why she doesn’t just “have him” • Lenina says she’s too scared, which Fanny says a half gramme of “soma” will fix.
Lenina visits John • Lenina takes Fanny’sadvice • John expresses his admiration of Lenina, but says he must prove himself to her first, according to his tribe’s tradition • Lenina doesn’t understand and is upset when she doesn’t get tokiss him • John tries to explain, but Lenina still doesn’t understand, especiallyaboutmarriage
“Hug me till you drug me, honey” • Lenina finally gets him to bluntly admit that he loves her • Lenina is very happy and kisses him • John tries to protest, but Lenina just starts undressing • Lenina contrasts John’s use of Shakespeare by using Fordian “poetry”
…awkward • John reacts violently and starts shouting quotes from Othello • “Whore! Impudent strumpet!” • John yells at her to go away or he’ll kill her • Lenina runs into the bathroom and, after a few minutes of letting him calm down, asks for her clothes
Departure • A minute or so later John gets a call about his mother being in the hospital • John rushes out • Lenina takes the opportunity to run away from John’s room
