Psalm 50 • In Your good pleasure make Zion prosper; • build up the walls of Jerusalem. • Then there will be righteous sacrifices, • whole burnt offerings to delight You; • then bullswill be offered on Your altar. Alleluia.
Holy, Holy, Holy. A passage from the Gospel according to Saint Luke (4:38-41), may his blessings be upon us all. Amen.
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘‘You are the Son of God!'' But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew • He was the Christ.

Special Saint Do you know who she is?
St. Demiana • We commemorated the consecration of her church on Tuesday. • Daughter of a Christian ruler in Egypt named Mark. • When she was old enough, her father wanted her to marry one of his good friends. She refused, wanting to remain a bride of Christ. Her father built her a palace outside the city for her and 40 of her friends to live as nuns. • Emperor Diocletian began to kill Christians who refused to worship his idols. Her father Mark fell into the temptation and knelt before the idols. When St. Demiana heard, she rebuked her father, who then confessed his Christian faith and was martyred.
St. Demiana • Emperor Diocletian sent soldiers to attack St. Demiana and her friends. They were all tortured in the name of Christ. Because of St. Demiana’s encouragement, they all endured all these tortures. • Many times Archangel Michael appeared to St. Demiana and healed her. This led many others to believe in God and be martyred for His sake. • The night before she was killed, Jesus appeared to her to encourage her and tell her of the church to be built in that place in her name. • About 400 people were martyred with St. Demiana that day.
St. Demiana • What are some ways we can strengthen our faith, like St. Demiana did? • We see how St. Demiana encouraged her friends to stay strong in their faith. How important is it for us also to surround ourselves with encouraging friends?
