Feudalism terminology • Feudalism- Socio-political system based on the exchange of land for services • Lord- Landowner (bigtime or smalltime) • Vassal- Someone who is given land by a Lord in exchange for military protection • Fief- The land given by a Lord to his Vassal
Feudalism terminology • Knight- Lower-level Vassal and armored mounted warrior loyal to his Lord • Chivalry- Code of conduct taught to knights (bravery, loyalty, honesty, etc) to try to prevent them from excessive violence • Peasants- Poor farmers • Serfs- Peasants who were bound to the land
