What is business crime? • Proposed definition of business crime: Business crime is any criminal offence that is committed against a person or property that is motivated by the connection of that person or property to a business. • Who does business crime affect? • Issues of perception of a town as being safe • Crime levels

  4. Business Crime Reduction Partnerships • Set up to reduce acquisitive and violent crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour against businesses, their premises, staff and customers • ABCP has129 BCRPs • 8 Regions • Work to a national standard of accreditation: the Safer Business Award

Partnership structure • Board of Management • Steering Group • Paid full/part time manager plus support • Secure accommodation • Radio link including police, local businesses and CCTV • Exclusion Notice Scheme • Offender target files for members • Incident reporting • Access to police and other photographs • Safer Business Award accredited

Safer Business Award • Provides a legal framework for sharing sensitive personal data under the DPA • Enhances professionalism • Encourages strong and effective local partnerships • Motivates businesses with a stake in the commercial success of town, city or shopping centres • Reassures customers and staff • Recognises and rewards success

BCRPs – crime and community focus • Examples of BCRPs responding to local crime and community needs and delivering added value • Hemel Hempstead BCRP – safer neighbourhoods • Reading BCRP – protecting vulnerable people • Exeter BCRP – city evacuation plan • Brighton BCRP – first time young offenders • Somerset West BCRP – rural crime • Southampton BCRP - school children • Maidstone BCRP – Community bus • Tunbridge Wells BCRP – prevent & deter strategy

The need to change... • 22% reduction in number of high street shops by 2018 • Significant job losses • Online retail sales to increase from 12.7% to 21.5% by 2018 • 164 major/medium sized companies going into administration • High Street consumer spending likely to reduce from 50% (2000) to 40% in 2014 • 153 UK town centres will need to shrink to survive • Need to develop the problem towns • This will present a range of social, economic and community safety challenges
