A B C A WHAT ARE THE A, B, C’s? You do not have to be degreed, i.e., M.D. or Ph.D. to be successful in researching an idea and producing a measurable outcome. First, allow yourself confidence that you can make a difference. = ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU CAN DO IT!
A B C A= ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU CAN DO IT! Take ownership of your idea. Set aside time to work on your idea. Don't get sidetracked! Write, write, write down your thoughts!
A WHAT ARE THE A, B, C’s? B C B = BRAINSTORM Usually, research ideas arise from an opportunity to problem solve or improve. When a question is brought to you – brainstorm avenues to change, improve or compare.
A B= BRAINSTORM B • Do you have an idea on how to save funds during recruitment? • What about a more streamlining process for orientation? • Have you the perfect solution to credentialing incoming residents/ fellows? • What's your idea? Share? C
A WHAT ARE THE A, B, C’s? B C C = COLLABORATE Share the idea! Get others on board with the concept! Including others will help to launch an idea and further the research investigation. Some projects need help with time delegation or access to material.
A C= COLLABORATE B C • Join a coordinator listerv. • Form a coordinator forum at your institution. • Attend regional and national meetings, i.e., specialty specific.
A B C Example of Coordinator-initiated research that cut department cost. • Researched and compared CME credits by faculty • Key Question “Where were the credits earned” • Facility Lectures? • National Conferences? • Online Courses? • Results showed out of a 2 year study that most CME’s for department faculty came from National Conferences. Our CME office was charging $3-4,000 per year for tracking and printed letters. • Outcome: The Department no longer participates with facility CME office and the coordinator was given “kudos” for saving this $ each year.
A Example of Coordinator-initiated project during interview season. B C • Program would invite 1-2 applicants per week to interview which resulted in long-term interviews and extended time of faculty. • Coordinator initiated proposal to interview committee to interview 5-6 applicants at one time. • Results proved successful • faculty more agreeable to interview • cut down coordinator's time of extended interviews • saved department money on refreshments • reservation of conference rooms reduced

TIPS • Education yourself on the subject. • Make sure you can communicate your ideas in an organized fashion and in understandable terms. • Involve those that share the same interest. Be a teamplayer. • Pay attention to the details. • Give yourself the time needed to analyze and reanalyze. • Accept constructive criticism.
