Earth Summit • Agenda 21 was revealed at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) • In Rio on June 14th 1992 • 179 governments voted to adopt the programme • The final text was the result of drafting, consultation and negotiation, beginning in 1989 and culminating at the two-week conference
Agenda 21 • Programme run by the UN related to sustainable development • Comprehensive blueprint of action to be taken: • Globally • Nationally • Locally • By various groups in every area where humans impact on the environment • UN organisations • Governments • Other major groups (NGOs)
Sustainable Development • Brundtland definition of sustainable development developed during the Ro Earth Summit "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“
Agenda 21 Consists of 4 main sections: • Social And Economic Dimensions • Conservation And Management Of Resources • Strengthening The Role Of Major Groups • Means Of Implementation
