  2. PRESENTERS • Margo Healy, Idaho State Board of Education • Stan Hill, Wake Forest University School of Medicine • Curt Rathburn, Winston-Salem Systemic Services, Inc.

  3. PRINCIPAL ACADEMY of LEADERSHIP • Started January, 2006 • Three year initiative with ongoing support • Partnership between Dept of Ed, State Board, and Winston-Salem Systemic Services • 19 middle school principals currently enrolled

  4. Project Components • Individual and Group Meetings • Surveys of Enacted Curriculum • Instructional Reviews

  5. Individual and Group Meetings • Seminars on assigned readings involving student work, leadership, sustainability, communication and conflict resolution • Presentations on data analysis, creating visions and strategic planning • Monthly coaching calls • School visits • Professional Learning Communities

  6. Surveys of Enacted Curriculum • In 2006, administered 256 ELA surveys and 183 math surveys • In 2007, administered 157 ELA surveys, 120 math surveys and 81 science surveys • All principals trained on using the website, creating displays and leading conversations with faculty and staff

  7. Instructional Reviews • Observed 828 classrooms in 2006 and 525 classrooms in 2007 • Five key areas: • What is the objective? • What is the teacher doing? • What are the students doing? • Is learning being assessed? • What is the overall quality of the lesson?

  8. Instructional Reviews, cont’d • Assess the effectiveness of current professional development activities • Inform future professional development • Used by principals to improve classroom instruction

  9. Following is part of a report and presentation given to principals and state department administrators on the results of Instructional Reviews in schools participating in the Principal Academy of Leadership the past two years.
