  2. What Makes a Good Essay • Paragraphs: • Sentences should be grouped into paragraphs which represent a unique thought or line of reasoning. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that clearly defines the purpose of the paragraph. • Your first sentence should be what the ENTIRE paragraph is about. If the rest of the paragraph doesn’t fall under the first sentence, the paragraph is disorganized and ineffective. • There are no rules of how many sentences you need, but as long as the topic is completed, it works.

  3. TOPIC SENTENCE PRACTICE • Read the paragraph below. Consider the topic sentence. Is this paragraph organized? Blue is certainly my favorite color. All day, I find myself staring at the sky or the lake. The color seems to match anything—just consider denim jeans, the most popular pants in the world! My favorite food would have to be chocolate ice cream. The creamy, chocolate dessert is my favorite item to eat. I love the rich taste and color of chocolate ice cream, and I try to eat it every day.

  4. LOGICAL ORDER • Sentences within a paragraph should be arranged in an order that corresponds to the time or mental reasoning. • Read the sample paragraphs that follow and determine what we should do to correct it.

  5. Paragraph #1: Consider the order of this paragraph. Determine how the sentences should be changed in order to be more coherent. During the mating season, male robins are characterized by brilliant black feathers on their heads. Robins can lay two sets of eggs in a season.The bird is commonly seen snatching worms from the earth to feed hatchlings.Soon, the females arrive to choose their mates and breed. They return to northern breeding grounds earlier than the females in order to compete with each other for the best nesting sites.

  6. Before you change the sentence around…. • Consider WHAT the sentence is about • Consider THE ORDER OF EVENTS • You will want to place it in the order of the robin’s breeding habits.

  7. Paragraph #1: Here is the proper order During the mating season, male robins are characterized by brilliant black feathers on their heads. They return to northern breeding grounds earlier than the females in order to compete with each other for the best nesting sites. Soon, the females arrive to choose their mates and breed. Robins can lay two sets of eggs in a season. The bird is commonly seen snatching worms from the earth to feed hatchlings.

Still missing something… • What about a topic sentence? • Choose one sentence below to place as the topic sentence for the paragraph. • Robins are my favorite bird. • Early spring is a wonderful time to watch amazing bird activity. • One common hobby is bird-watching. • BEST CHOICE: Early spring is a wonderful time to watch amazing bird activity.

  9. Correct Pronoun Use • When composing paragraphs, pay close attention to pronouns. Use your best judgment to determine if the reader may forget an antecedent. Consider the following example: • Larry is my brother. As kids, he and I would terrorize the neighborhood. During the summer, we would keep street hockey games going long into the evening. On the empty lot, he liked to build dirt ramps. • What’s the issue? The last sentence has “he” as the pronoun, but the antecedent “Larry” is too far too distant of a memory. It should be replaced by “Larry”.

  10. Redundancy: Why pronouns are necessary • Repetition of words can make a sentence dull. Read below: • The tree in my backyard was tall and gnarled. I marveled at that centuries-old tree every day as a kid. I wished the tree could tell stories about this land. • What word is too often repeated? • What should you do to change it up?

  11. Use Figurative Language! • The oak in my backyard was tall and gnarled. I marveled at that centuries-old tree every day as a kid. I wished that wise man could tell stories about this land.

  12. Effective Word Choice • Be sure to explain the connection between the facts you are using and your conclusion. Don’t assume that the reader will agree with your viewpoint regarding the significance of a given fact. • Instead of using ABSOLUTE words like “always” “everyone” “all” “entire” “whole” “no one” “never” • Use words like: “usually” “sometimes” “most” “many” or “a majority”

  13. Fix the sentences! 1.) It is always hot in Arizona. NEW: It is usually hot in Arizona. 2.) No doctor likes to reveal bad news. NEW: Compassionate doctors do not like to reveal bad news. 3.) All Americans like football. NEW: Most Americans like football.

  14. Redundant or Irrelevant Language • Good paragraphs do not include information irrelevant to the topic of a sentence or paragraphs. Effective paragraphs convey its information precisely and concisely. Don’t add in sentences to make a paragraph longer. Read the paragraph below. What should be removed? • My first baseball game was awesome and amazing. My father bought us third-row seats, not right in front, along the first-base line right by the wall. I enjoyed all the action as I munched on nachos and a hotdog. I like a lot of relish on my hotdogs. Our teams won the game, and I got to spend quality time with my dad. I would love to do it again.

  15. Redundant/Irrelevant Language • My first baseball game was awesome and amazing. My father bought us third-row seats, not right in front, along the first-base line right by the wall. I enjoyed all the action as I munched on nachos and a hotdog. I like a lot of relish on my hotdogs. Our teams won the game, and I got to spend quality time with my dad. I would love to do it again. • “Amazing” and “awesome” are synonyms—you don’t need both • The fact that the seats are third-row means they aren’t right in front, so that is unnecessary. • “I like a lot of relish on my hotdogs”—this sentence isn’t about the hotdogs; it’s about baseball

  16. Relationships Between Paragraphs • Paragraphs must have a certain amount of independence from each other, yet they should have similar tone and style, and provide the reader with a meaningful transition from one topic to the next. • Transition words are important, but don’t use simple words like “first” “second” or “in conclusion.” Use the guide below. • If you are contrasting items…. -but, however, on the other hand, conversely, alternatively, although, even though • If you are showing similarities…. -likewise, similarly • If you are presenting evidence…. -since, because, in light of, for example, for instance, according to • If you are concluding a thought…. -therefore, thus, as a result, so, it follows that,

  17. What to do from here? • We will practice avoiding the mistakes writers often make. • This will help us not only prepare for the writing portion of the ACT, but the English test as well
