6. Commonwealth of Nations As colonies slowly gained their independence, especially after WWII, modern attitudes were required and that situation started a process of „decolonization“. The procedure was finalized by the political transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997. Many of the former British colonies joined with the newly established British Commonwealth that was officially brought into being in 1931. Later, this association was renamed the Commonwealth of Nations. . The Commonwealth of Nations is a free association of 53 independent countries.
