Building A Cell Membrane! • Build your phospholipids first • Marshmallows represent the phosphate head • Break the toothpicks in half. They represent the fatty acid tails • Build 30 phospholipids • Make sure you line up the phospholipidbilayer correctly! Think POLAR and NONPOLAR!
Cholesterol • Stabilizes the phospholipids and keeps them from sticking together • Use gummy bears to represent cholesterol. • Be sure to place them correctly!
Proteins • Regulate which molecules enter and exit the cell • We will discuss three types of proteins
Channel Protein • Open channel in the cell membrane • Lets material pass in and out of the cell • Use a twizzler to make a channel protein in your cell membrane
Carrier Protein • Changes shape as it helps material move through the cell • Use two pretzel sticks to create a carrier protein in your cell membrane
Receptor Protein • Allows molecules to bind to the surface of the cell • Does not bring molecules into cell • Use a candy orange slice and a pretzel stick to make a receptor protein
