2. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 2 Vision Statement Indian Railways will be free of collisions of trains at high speeds
Prevent loss of life
Save railway assets
In the most Cost-effective manner
Within 3 years.
3. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 3 Goal and Objective Protect lives of railway passengers and assets from collisions between trains
Develop and prove micro-processor based devices
For locomotive
For guard-vehicle
For station
Which interact in a network to prevent moving trains colliding with each other at dangerous speeds
Acting automatically independent of human actions
4. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 4 Todays Situation The railway operation today suffers from a fundamental lacuna that it is a SIGNALLED system- and the single point failure is built in drivers human actions
At stations failure to read signal can be disastrous: signals costing millions of rupees cannot directly CONTROL !
In block section, driver has to drive BLINDLY till he approaches next signal, on TRUST !
He has no way to know what is ahead 3 km- to be able to stop to prevent collision
5. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 5 How Did We Get Here? Concentration at stations to make setting of routes and signalling free from human failures gave protection to station staff
Driver with his own life on firing line- trained & relied upon to observe SIGNAL as sacrosanct-and driving in block section at the HIGHEST speed on trust taken for granted.
Double line sections, derailments causing obstructions/ non-interlocked working despatching trains on wrong lines, high density routes with stressed drivers missing signals make railway accident prone NOW!
6. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 6 Available Options Centralised traffic control and train control systems available- but very expensive vital two way communication all along routes to central control is a must. Even advanced railways find it expensive.
ACD system is loco mounted and provides distributed control system
The most cost effective solution is our development of ACD. How things developHow things develop
7. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 7 We will cover: Development of ACD
Philosophy of ACD
Test Results
Identify action items
8. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 8 Solution.
9. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 9 Simply put the ACD anti-collision Device, networked, is an intelligent interactive unit: can be understood as..
10. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 10 Imagine In dark spaceour ACD constantly looks for another ACD,within range equal to braking distance required for relative speed,- they communicate with each other- identify and if they happen to be having same track identification and are moving towards each other automatically restrain and stop each other!
11. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 11 Even if the ACD finds the other one on different track, if one of them is exhibiting unusual behaviour- the ACD moving at high speed restrains and reduces speed until the normal situation is confirmed.
12. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 12 Head on collision avoided
13. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 13 Avoiding side collision
14. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 14 Avoid rear end collision
15. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 15 Anti- Collision DeviceInvented by Mr.B.Rajaram then MD/Konkan Railway.First experimental prototypes proven in December 1999Commercial prototypes jointly tested with RDSO and cleared June 2001

18. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 18
19. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 19 Objective of ACD network Prevent dangerous collisions in midsection and at stations at high speeds.
Be additional safety shield- and does not replace any existing systems of safety
20. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 20 Success of meeting the objective ACD when mounted on loco with the ABU can
Stop all mid-section collisions
Prevents high speed collisions in station areas
With another ACD fitted moving train unit
Hence ACD has proven to meet the objectives as defined.
21. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 21 Challenge: self identification of, on which track , loco is moving.
22. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 22 Observations Deviation Count theory, when data from GPS is available, is proven to work without failure to arrive at track ID automatically
Where the station, after survey for GPS reception and layout peculiarity, is found to be not amenable for auto ID through Deviation count theory, train is made to leave with Track ID failure flag at FULL speed, until it discovers another approaching train within 3 km, when both the trains are slowed down to 25 kmph , and if they cross without event, the correct track IDs are allocated, and trains proceed normally at full speed.
23. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 23 Deviation Count: new innovative approach The theory is basically un-exceptional and has proven itself for all data on points and crossing between speeds of 1 kmph to 55 kmph
Reversals of movements also detected.
For normal running trains without shunting, negotiating points and crossings at speeds more than 1kmph , which is the normal, Deviation Count works.
ACD also ensures that excessive unsafe speed will not be allowed on points and crossings.
24. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 24 Proven performance The benefit: accidents of following nature will be prevented:
In block section:
Head on collisions
Side collisions
Rear end collisions
Station area
Head on and rear collisions between trains at speeds higher than 25 kmph

34. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 34 Redundancies though not a vital system There are 4 microprocessor units when two trains come within 3 kilometers.
When loco ACD fails
In communication then the guard ACD conveys to other train the line ID info- but cannot stop train as auto braking unit cannot be activated.
As the ACD has same level of reliability of other control systems in loco, whether failure of ACD can be treated as failure of loco- because it is expected to be as rare if not better, than a normal loco failure item ; is a matter for decision
Spare ACD kept at next junction station- to replace the defective one.
35. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 35 Fail-safe feature: if train leaves with no track ID
36. 10 October 2011 Konkan Railway Raksha Kavach 36 Fear of theft of Repeaters for radio communication:
