eLearning = learning When redesigning this course into an e-course, try to: • Define learning objectives for this e-course; • Think about the activities to get to the learning objectives and give us your suggestion on what activities would benefit the e-course. QUESTION: At the end of the course we ask you to add a slide with an extra topic that we did not mention in this powerpoint and add it to the course you are building.
Interactivity and Motivation • eLearning is all about interaction:you only rely on verbal communication in eLearning. This means that you have to provide learners with examples, case studies, games, quizzes, self-assessments, assignments… and any interactivity you can. Adding interactivity will benefit both teacher and learner. It will give the learner more confidence in the knowledge they acquire through eLearning. It will give the teacher some feedback on the capacity of the learner to obtaining knowledge. • Interaction keeps learners motivated:Think about yourself as a learner. What do you like? Continuously reading a text or being challenged by visuals, text, reflections, self-assessments? Most of us like interactivity because it keeps our brain moving. It is the same with eLearning . • QUESTION: what interactivity do/did you like the most as a learner/student? Show us in the e-course (picture, youtube movie, drawing…)
The look and feel of a course • A recognizable look and feel throughout the course; • Adding visuals (insert some of your own: pictures, drawings, movies…) • QUESTION:Irfanview is a free software to manipulate pictures/images. It can help you in the field if you need to reduce the size of the images or adjust parts in it. See if you can download this software and adjust the size of the picture in the next slide. Make use of visualizations: bullet lists are boring (yes this is a boring ppt! But that is why you can make it better). Any ppt/course can be made much more attractive and motivating by using:
Technical aspects • What are the field conditions (internet connectivity, computers per capita, do learners have USB, CDRom …) • What is your budget? Will you use free open source softwares or commercial software to build courses? (more info on Unesco’s free open source portal) • How will you deliver your courses (via webpage portal, LMS, CDRom, SDCard …)? • What type of devices will you use? (mobile devices, desktop computers, small portable computers…) • QUESTION: What else can you think off?
Human resources A small eLearning team will consist of: • IT specialist • Graphic designer • Subject Matter specialist • eLearning course Tutor QUESTION: what roles would you give these experts in developing a course? (keep it short)
Tips for eLearning • Limit scrolling: it is better to push your learners to read 10 short screens than one long, endless one. • Each learning objective should take maximum take more than 1,5 hour of studying. • Student time invested for an eLearning course is ideally 5 hours. • QUESTION:This is a publication with 701 tips for eLearning: pick up the 10 tips you feel are the most important for eLearning and add them to the eXeLearning e-course.
