Full-time Faculty: • Dr. Ted Abernethy – 1995 • Ph.D. - Ohio University • M.S. in Sports Administration - St. Thomas University • Originally from Pennsylvania – Pitt Undergrad • Dr. Seok-Ho Song – 2002 • Ph.D. - University of New Mexico • M.A. - Southern Illinois University • Originally from South Korea • Dr. Jan Bell – 1985 • Ed.D. - Temple University • M.Ed. - S.U.N.Y. - College at Brockport • Originally from Maryland

Background of Sports Administration • Ohio University, 1966 – first graduate program • St. Thomas (Biscayne College), 1973 – started the first undergraduate program, a B.A. in Sports Administration • STU’s M.S. in Sports Administration was first offered in 1977. • In 1994, we offered the MBA and in 1996, the BBA. • In 2000(approximately), we began the Joint J.D./M.S. in sports administration • Last summer, A3 2006, we started to offer the Joint J.D./M.B.A. in sports administration

Sports Administration Program Approval • Today, according to the NASSM (North American Society for Sport Management) website, there are 123colleges or universities offering some type of master’s degree in sports administration or sport management. • Of those 123 schools, only 27 have attained the NASPE/NASSM Program Approval – St. Thomas is one of the 27 approved programs. Programs offered in: Sports Administration • Master of Business Administration (MBA)(42-45 hours) • Master of Science (M.S.)(36 hours) • Joint J.D. / M.S. with the Law School(27 hours plus the law degree) • Graduate Certificate(12 hours) • Joint J.D. / M.B.A. with the Law School(minimum 33 hours plus the law degree) (passed Board of Trustees 2/14/06 – began May, 2006)

SPO AD Graduate Students at STU: • Come from somewhere other than South Florida. • Have a variety of backgrounds, experience, and undergraduate majors. • Take advantage of opportunities to get sports (related) experience while taking their classes. • Are quite diversified via their gender, race, color, national and ethnic origins.

  9. Because of these factors, Most graduate sports administration students at St. Thomas enroll as full-time students. (Usually 2 courses per term depending on desired courses and their availability. Each course meets one time per week for four hours. Law school students usually take 1 course per term.)

  10. Course Offering Timeframe Graduate courses in accounting, business, management and sports administration are offered in 5 nine-week termsduring a calendar year

  11. 5 – TERMS per year CALENDAR • A3 (summer) = May 15 -> July 15, 2007 • A6 (first half of Fall) = August 11 -> October 12, 2007 • A7 (second half of Fall) = October 13 -> December 14, 2007 • A1 (first half of Spring) = January 5 -> March 7, 2008 • A2 (second half of Spring) = March 8 -> May 9, 2008 • A3 (summer) = May 12 -> July 12, 2008 Repeat: • A6 (first half of Fall) = Mid-August - > Mid-October, etc. Consult the Graduate Catalog and/or the University’s web site for the exact dates.

What we offer: • Business Courses with an application to sports. • Opportunities to getexperience through volunteer work and internships. • Access to professionals in the industry who serve as adjunct professors, guest lecturers and mentors, many of whom are our alumni. • Access to classmates who are working in the industry and bring their experiences to class.

  13. Required Courses for either degree: • Seminar & Principles of Sports Administration • Applied Research Methods • MBA also requires a 27 credit hour core of business, accounting, finance and management courses • AND, depending on the degree being pursued you’ll select 2-8 electives from . . .

Sports Administration Electives • Sports media and and public relations • Facility and event management • Sports financial management • Sports marketing and promotions • Sports psychology • Leisure services management • Collegiate sports governance • Fund raising • Negotiations in the sports industry • Sports ethics • Internship I, Internship II

  20. Concluding remarks . . . • Keys to getting a job in sports • Knowledge – through classes • Experience – announced opportunities • Networking base – via interaction from the above as well as the STU alumni network • Our Motto is: WHATEVER IT TAKES !!!

  21. After Admissions Decisions, the Orientation Packet • Will be emailed approximately one month prior to the anticipated start term (with many attachments) (By the end of June) • Will include date, time, etc. for advising and registration

Contents of Orientation Packet • Intent form – to be completed and returned • Academic calendar • Tuition and fees schedule • Program Course selection form – to be completed and returned • Policy information pertaining to volunteer experiences, internships and comprehensive exams • List of accepted students with contact and other information – potential source of roommates • Housing/apartment list

  23. Other Goodies: • Annual Spo Ad Grad Student Reception – August 8, 2007 – time to network • Financial Aid – primarily restricted to loans – go to B.A.S.I.C. +/or apply on-line • Housing – We have a list – ask for it. • Today’s session – personal interview & writing assessment
