2. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED It’s all about helping Fifteen years ago, Interfaith Caregivers Trenton/Faith in Action (ICT) emerged out of a desire to help and a need for help. By working with and empowering congregations in their volunteer efforts, ICT assists them in carrying out their mission to serve God and man. Interfaith Caregivers helps recruit, train and match volunteers who provide non-medical support services free of charge to homebound individuals. Whether it is a ride to the doctor, food shopping, running errands, or assistance with some other everyday task, ICT is all about neighbors helping neighbors to live life to its fullest.

3. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED Mission Interfaith Caregivers Trenton/Faith in Action, Inc., an interfaith coalition, is dedicated to promoting the independence and dignity of the homebound elderly and people with disabilities by matching them with caring volunteers who assist with the tasks of everyday life.

4. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED From the Board President Dear Friends of Interfaith Caregivers Trenton: Throughout the 16 years of its existence, Interfaith Caregivers Trenton has worked to serve the needs of Mercer County’s senior and disabled residents, with the ultimate goal of enabling them to remain in their homes and maintain their dignity. Our most successful year in terms of volunteer services provided was 2009. During the year, our 321 volunteers recorded approximately 10,500 hours of “friendly neighbor service”. This past year has also been our most successful in the area of fundraising. We received multiple grants from charitable foundations and, in particular, a special grant from Partnership in Philanthropy, which provides expert advice and guidance to selected non-profit organizations. They have reviewed all aspects of our operations and are helping us to strengthen our fundraising efforts. Of course, fundraising remains a challenge during these difficult economic times. On a more positive note, during 2009, I have continued to serve as a volunteer and, as always, have derived much pleasure and satisfaction from the relationships I have developed with care receivers. Finally, on behalf of the entire Board, I extend our gratitude to our benefactors, clergy members and all of our volunteers, including our talented and dedicated staff. 5. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED From the Executive Director Dear friends of ICT: As we end our celebration of 15 years of service to the elderly in 2009 and look forward to the challenges ahead in 2010, I feel a sense of wonder at all that we have accomplished together. I am also excited by all that we plan for the future, in spite of the economic downturn. If there ever was a time for volunteer opportunities, it is now. It is because of the amazing support and dedication of over 300 actively serving volunteers, that we have the ability to reach as many elderly care receivers who could use a little “friendly neighbor” assistance. Knowing that someone cares gives hope for another day. Because of generous donations, this year we were able to strengthen our infrastructure. We hired two part time employees who are providing needed skills to further our mission to the homebound. With this additional coordination support, we plan to enlist more congregations in our community to join in our mission to serve the elderly in 2010. Other improvements include replacing our 9 year old copier with a state of the art machine that will save us time, money and frustration, thanks to a generous grant from the James Kerney Foundation! In 2009, we strengthened our collaboration with Project Connect by providing over 1,000 hours of service to seniors with multiple needs, and providing the assistance of more than one agency. Also, as a result of the Project Connect collaboration, sponsored by United Way, our member congregations appreciate having a van that can transport seniors to religious services on the weekend. Another highlight in this past year was winning a scholarship from Partnership in Philanthropy or PIP. We are now working with Les Loysen, a professional in development with over 30 years of experience in the field. We are most blessed to receive his counsel. Finally, our annual fundraiser, Shining Lights, was a big success. Our proceeds from the event were almost double last year’s total. What a great way to wind down our 15th anniversary year! We are most grateful to Rev. Darrell L. Armstrong from Shiloh Baptist Church and Eileen Doremus, from the Mercer County Office on Aging for the incredible work they do for seniors in our community. They are truly “Shining Lights”! 2009 was a great year because of the continued support of all our friends who have a heart for the elderly. Because of our faithful volunteers and benefactors, we continue to serve our elderly neighbors in need. 6. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED SERVICES Client Services • Shopping and errands • Transportation to appointments • Friendly visits • Indoor/outdoor chores • Minor household repairs • Occasional meal preparation • Clerical assistance • Short-term respite care • Telephone reassurance • Congregation Supports • Comprehensive on-going assistance in organizing and sustaining the congregation’s outreach ministry to the homebound, in keeping with its own mission and scriptural basis for service • Insurance coverage for volunteers serving and transporting the elderly and disabled • Help with locating homebound members who have lost touch with the congregation • Leadership training for group leaders who oversee this outreach ministry • Training for volunteers serving the homebound, • Help with recruiting additional volunteers from both within and outside the congregation • Linkage to the community network of medical and social services • Special topic workshops on Alzheimer’s disease, depression, sensory loss, family relationships, bereavement, etc. • Linkage with other congregations throughout Greater Trenton.

8. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED STAFF AND ACTIVITIES The Executive Director assisted at recruitments at Sacred Heart Church and St. Mary’s Church in Bordentown. She also appeared on WIMG and WDVR radio to talk about the work of Interfaith Caregivers. Additionally, presentations and display tables were provided at Covenant Presbyterian Church, St. Mary’s Cathedral, health fairs, the ECHO senior group in Trenton, and Incarnation Church. In 2009, Mary Ann Isaac obtained recertification as an Administrator of Volunteer Services through the American Hospital Association. Jane is reviewing and updating agency policies and procedures to incorporate the most current “Best Practices”. She has become acquainted with our key leaders and has been upgrading our written materials. She has also been getting excellent training from the Hands on Helpers group in Princeton and is currently being trained for certification as an Administrator of Volunteer Services through the American Hospital Association. Interfaith Caregivers continues to strengthen its coalition of churches and conduct Hispanic and minority outreach. Since Gabriela Sikorski Gill and Jane Latini came onboard in 2009, they have successfully identified and matched 322 care receivers who have received 10,467 hours of service. Critical to the overall success of the program is the support of Group Leaders, from our member congregations, through trainings, workshops and recognition events. Gabby and Jane hosted seven Group Leader trainings, three Group Leader meetings, and planned and hosted four workshops during 2009. ICT also conducted 23 volunteer training sessions and hosted 3 workshops- one on Succession Planning, hosted at our office in Lawrenceville, another on Reflective Listening, and a third on Scrapbooking, preserving memories for care receivers. ICT’s veteran Program Assistant, Beverly Bodine, continued to provide valued support. ICT’s grant writer was successful in securing funding from twelve new sources in 2008. A part-time non-profit CPA continues to provide support for payroll and grant financial reporting. We hired an additional support person for our part time coordinators to assist in program details. Dottie Richardson worked with Interfaith Caregivers in the early years and has rejoined us in 2009. She is currently responsible for updating information into our data base system, for PR, for background checks and phone calling volunteers/group leaders.

The organization made over $7,200 in addition to honoring outstanding advocates for the elderly, Rev. Darrell L. Armstrong and Eileen Doremus. In May, the Board held a retreat on “The Personal Ask”, facilitated by Richard Mc Laughlin, Business Consultant. Board members had the opportunity to practice asking individuals for donations. The lessons learned will help us achieve the goals of the current three year strategic plan. Outreach continues to the churches and congregations. The ICT Board is a dynamic and active group of concerned community volunteers. The full board meets bi-monthly as do committees in Personnel/Board Development, Special Events/Public Relations, Finance and Long Range Planning/Evaluation. Board recruitment is ongoing. In 2009, we received a special grant from Partners in Philanthropy (PIP) which provides expert mentorship to help strengthen our non-profit organization. PIP has reviewed all aspects of our operation and is helping us to look at ways to strengthen all funding streams.

The heart and soul of our ministry are the volunteers who so generously live out the divine imperative to love thy neighbor. They come from all walks of life and from many different faith communities. 11. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED COLLABORATIONS The 15th Annual VolunteerDinner reflected the kind of collaboration upon which Interfaith Caregivers has build its success in serving the community. The event was generously supported by the students and staff of Villa Victoria Academy. Member congregations were represented by their wonderful pastors/rabies, group leaders, and volunteers. Lisa Carmalt, the founder of Interfaith Caregivers was our key note speaker at the event. Freeholders Pat Colavita, Ann Cannon, Anthony Carabelli and Dan Benson also gave certificates of recognition to outstanding volunteers. Along with our collaboration of 25 member congregations, we continue to meet with United Way agencies. Project Connect is a collaboration of 8 area agencies coordinating services and tracking each client’s referrals through a social worker specifically assigned for that purpose. Currently ICT has 104 clients being serviced by more than one agency through the Project Connect initiative. We also continue our membership in the American Society of Directors of Volunteer Services, The Society on Aging, Women in Development, and the Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce. The Mercer County Chamber of Commerce and ICT are actively involved in a committee to develop programs and round table discussions for area Executive Directors. We continue our collaboration with RSVP, Mobile Meals and the New Jersey and National Faith in Action programs.

22. 15th ANNIVVERSARY - TOGETHER WE SERVED FUTURE PLANS Interfaith Caregivers Trenton’s goal remains to bring more resources and tangible help to isolated seniors and disabled persons in our community. We plan on doing this by giving increased attention to the volunteer component of our program, by adding10% more volunteers to our current roster. We anticipate this action will increase the number of care receivers that we are able to serve by10%. During 2009, ICT was able to strengthen and grow our base of volunteers and group leaders. We look forward to recruiting more congregations in 2010 to increase our outreach. ICT thanks all our supporters for helping us to continue our mission to homebound elderly and people with disabilities. Our ability to serve the homebound population is contingent on community support. As a society, we can measure our compassion by how much we honor seniors who have helped shape our world. We are grateful to you for providing your time, your talents and your treasure for sustaining this needed ministry to the homebound.
