Battling the Bottle By: Cain Buckler SFSU
Our Goal: To phase out the sale and dispersal of plastic water bottles on campus
Concerns • If plastic water bottles are no longer sold won’t that lead to an increase in the sales of sodas? • What if I’m thirsty and I don’t have a reusable bottle? • Filling up a reusable bottle is too difficult • Selling water bottles creates revenue and is a large portion of my sales • Bottled water is healthier for me. Tap water is gross
Our Goal: To phase out the sale and dispersal of plastic water bottles on campus • Step 1: Phase out plastic water bottles at University events like sporting events, catered meetings, and conferences. • Step 2: Phase out plastic water bottles from being sold on campus.
How to make it work • Collaboration • Education • Infrastructure
Collaboration • Create a TTBT student organization • Outreach and get new members • Find out who else on campus on campus is sustainability minded • Set up meetings with you school’s student government, administrators, and facilities staff • Look for allies in your surrounding community to support your campaign
Infrastructure • Installed a water refill station on every primary floor of every academic building • Ordered 4 outdoor refill stations • Instituted a Vender Sustainability Grade
