Heat extraction features Thanks to Pier Paolo Granieri for cable images Collars spacing give 6% open We see the open helium paths through the “fish-bones’ and the open quench heater between layers. Open quench heater Open collaring shoes Glyn A Kirby, LARP CM18/HiLumi LHC Meeting May 2012
-Coil manufacture for 3 apertures completed. • -99% of components delivered for all 3 magnets. • (We are only missing the half shells , which have been replaced by 4 rods for vertical test) • -Magnet zero • Warm field measurements very good result! • Waiting for 1.9K test in SM18. (end May/ June). • Cold test will start to measure heat extraction. • (new expected heat load ~860 W @ 1.9K !) • Magnet 1 • Aperture assembly started. (cold test June /July) MQXC project over view Glyn A Kirby, LARP CM18/HiLumi LHC Meeting May 2012

MQXC Magnetic shims. 8 rods in the collars, and 8 plates between collar’s and yoke.We can adjust final field quality + or – several units Magnetic shims can me mounted or removed easily Glyn A Kirby, LARP CM18/HiLumi LHC Meeting May 2012
Results from Warm Field measurements in yoked magnet zero Magnetic measurements of the MQXC-1 show all together a very slightly improved field quality with respect to the collared coil. The mulitpole components at 27 mm reference radius are all below 1 unit in 10-4. The effect of the iron yoke on the allowed multipoles is slightly lower than expected (-0.1 instead of -0.48 units for the b6 and -0.005 instead of -0.02 for the b10). It will have to be seen if this is confirmed with the new and more appropriate search coil. The b6 component in the straight section is about 1 unit higher than expected, but in the right direction. The b6 could be further reduced by installing all the tuning rods. This would be useful also for the field quality at nominal excitation, because the saturation effect on the iron yoke is only of the order of 0.4 units. Heat Extraction Cold Horizontal Testing • We plan to use a std. MQ cryostat • The horizontal test is to see if we can extract the equivalent large heat load (860W over the triplet) (see Rob’s talk later ) • Heaters on the cold bore and in the magnet simulate the beam beating~ 20W on the 2m magnet Valve box to feed two heat exchanger tubes through magnet SM18 Test stand 2M- MQXC MQ vacuum vessel Glyn A Kirby, LARP CM18/HiLumi LHC Meeting May 2012
