Colocation Session 4:Reanalysis feedbackstoECV/CDR updates Paul Poli and David Tan CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Reanalysis within a Climate Service Reanalysis Feed-back findings (consistency of ECVs & CDRs) Request updates CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Motivates Core-ClimaxKey Objective #4 “Propose a feedback mechanism ensuring that the results of the reanalysis processget appropriately reflected into updates of CDRs” • Related: How will CDR updates get decided/planned? How will they take reanalysis feedback into account? • Why is this essential for Climate Services? • See following example • Why emphasize co-ordination? • See example of ERA-Interim, MACC, ERA-SAT CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Example 1: Feedback on biases Monitoring Antarctic Ozone Loss & Recovery Reanalyses capture main features and show broad agreement (DU) … butbiases in observational input undermine Climate Quality/Services Reanalysis Feedback quantitative, detailed CDR Reprocessing Updated CDRs showing homogeneity, reduced bias CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Co-ordination is important Information flow … NWP → ERA-Interim → MACC → ERA-SAT … UV-based Ozone instruments (daylight only): SCIAMACHY, SBUV, OMI MIPAS (IR) active Scope to use MLS (MW) and newly available MIPAS HIRS-Ch9, AIRS, IASI might also help ERA-SAT. Expect further interaction with Data Providers. MACC developments inform ERA-SAT development and vice versa Close co-ordination shown within ECMWF would be valuable more widely CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Discussion Points • To follow session talks • What information do the Reanalysis Projects have that would be useful feedback to providers of ECV/CDR datasets? • How can the information be fed back? • How do you request/receive updates, i.e. improved CDRs? • How will CDR updates get decided/planned? How will they take reanalysis feedback into account? CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Need for consistencyacross instruments & epochs Satellite-based ozone data assimilated in ERA-Interim CORE-CLIMAX Colocation, REA Brussels, May 2013
Context: CORE-CLIMAXKey objective #4 “Propose a feedback mechanism ensuring that the results of the reanalysis processget appropriately reflected into updates of CDRs” • Reanalysis results: 2 types • Gridded fields and downstream diagnostics (monthly/area averages) • Fit to observational CDR • Consequently, 2 types of information need feeding-back • How will CDR updates get decided/planned and how will they take reanalysis feedback into account?
