Populations Served • DCF primary mandate is to serve children and families where there has been an allegation of child abuse or neglect. • Children under the age of 18 who are the victims of abuse and neglect (86%) • Children in Need of Services (CHINS) Ages 6-16 (5%) • Voluntary Applications (8%) • Other (e.g., Court-Ordered Custody) (2%)

  3. Typical Pathways to DCF Services for Children with Autism • Voluntary Applications • Referrals from Schools • Referrals from Courts • Interim Agreement

  4. DCF Services for Children and Young Adults with Autism • Case management • Intensive Foster Care • DCF purchases residential school services through contracts with the following providers • New England Center • May Institute • Melmark

  5. Systemic Challenges • DCF involvement with children and young adults with autism is primarily through a request for voluntary services. DCF workers need access to expert knowledge about, and alternative services for children with autism • Information systems do not support aggregate analysis of data specific to children or young adults with autism • Systemic service gaps include: • Community-based services to support parents caring for children / young adults with autism • Transition services as children / young adults are returning home after being in residential placement • Services for young adults as they transition to an adult serving agency
