  1. Resiliency WPAC general meeting Feb. 5, 2015

  2. What does it mean to be resilient? • “People who are resilient draw on strengths in themselves, their relationships, and their communities to help them overcome adversity. Resilient people often find meaning even in times of trouble and gain confidence from overcoming adversity. In this way, resilience can contribute to a deeply satisfying life.” • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1UCI2ZHEqw

  3. Factors of Resiliency • Finding positive meaning in your life despite difficult or traumatic events • Coping with stress in healthy ways and avoiding harmful coping strategies • A positive view of yourself and confidence in your strengths and abilities • Good problem-solving and communication skills • Feeling in control • Helping others • Sense of community

  4. Common Misconceptions • Resilience is either something you have or you don’t • Resilient people are self-reliant, they don’t need much from other people • Resilient people are immune to stress and negative emotions • Resilient people do not process grief normally/push emotions under the rug • “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” • Remember, it is not the actual event that makes you stronger. It is you!

  5. How does this affect YOU? • Consistent evidence suggests that stress impedes the academic performance of approximately 1/3 of the college population • Sleeping and eating problems, physical illness, anxiety, and depression • Large universities: environmental factors • High-stakes academic pressure, minimal academic support compared to high school, potential social isolation during the transition, and long-term financial debt • Research has documented college stress and the increasing number of students requesting psychological assistance • It may be more practical to increase resilience rather than to try and reduce risk

  6. 10 Ways to Build Resilience • Make Connections • Avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems • Accept that change is a part of living • Move toward your goals • Take decisive actions • Look for opportunities of self-discovery • Nurture a positive view of yourself • Keep things in perspective • Maintain a hopeful outlook • Take care of yourself
