Qualities of a Newspaper Article • Starts with an EYE CATCHING headline • Ex: “Hull enters Hall on thankful note” • Just the bare bones of the story (who, what, when, where and why) begin the article in a LEAD PARAGRAPH • Like a short summary of the story • Ex. Toronto—Hull’s induction into the 2009 Hockey Hall of Fame class Monday night, a ceremony predicted many years ago for the Blues’ right winger, was recognition on a national level for the player who finished as the third-leading scorer in the history of the game.
Qualities of a Newspaper Article cont. • After the lead, explain the story in more detail • Who was there? • What specifically happened? • Fill in background information you think the reader would be confused without. • Ex. Some of Brett Hull’s hockey history • Do NOT use the first person (no “I”, “me”, “my”)
Qualities of a Newspaper Article cont. • No bias. Keep emotions OUT of the article • Just reporting the facts • Use quotes from witnesses/those involved to flavor the story • Quotes from Brett Hull • Quotes from Hull’s family members, teammates, coaches, etc…
