Chapter 6Blue Book Structure and Movement
5 Functions of The Skeletal System • 1.The skeleton give shape and support to your body. • 2. Bones protect your inner organs. • 3. Major muscles attach to bones and help them move. • 4. The bone marrow makes blood cells. • 5. Store minerals like calcium and phosphorus.
Muscular System • Muscles are organs that relax and contract to all movement. • Muscles always work in pairs • Voluntary muscles – muscles you can control. Arms, legs, etc. • Involuntary muscles – muscles you can’t consciously control. Heart, digestive system, etc.
Types of Muscle Tissue • 1. Skeletal muscles: • move bones. • Voluntary muscles. • They are attached to the bones by tendons. • Most numerous muscles in the body. • These muscles are “striated”; they looked striped in the microscope. • Contract quickly and tire easily.
Muscle Types (cont’d) • 2. Smooth muscle: • Involuntary muscles • Moves internal organs • Contract and relax slowly • Not striated • Intestines, blood vessels, bladder, etc.
Muscle Types (cont’d) • 3. Cardiac muscle: • Found only in the heart. • Involuntary • Striated • Contracts about 70 times per minute. • 4,200 x each hour • 100,800 x each day • 36,792,000 x each year • 2,759,400,000 x during the average life expectancy of 75 years old!
Skin • The skin is the body’s largest organ! • Made up of 2 layers: epidermis is the outer layer, dermis is the inner layer. • The dermis is thick and contains many blood vessels, nerves, oil and sweat glands. • People that gain excess weight have their fat deposited here.
Skin Functions • 5 functions of the skin: • Protection from physical or chemical injury, diseases, and excess water loss. • Sensory organ – temperature, pressure and pain. • Makes vitamin D. • Regulates body temperature • Excrete wastes.
