  1. c/CPT Barry and c/CPT Shumate Conducting a Deliberate Attack on the Squad Level

  2. Why we conduct this • Battle drill 1A: Squad Attack in FM 7-8 • Teaches basic attack skills to suppress enemy and destroy them • Battle drills are proven techniques the Army uses to defeat enemies • Squads rarely operate independently; for training, though, we train in squads

  3. Planning • All missions begin with the squad leader receiving an operations order (OPORD) • The squad leader then issues a warning order (WARNO) to squad and plans a course of action, taking several factors into consideration • The squad leader issues the OPORD to the squad members and begins the mission

  4. Formation and Movement • Most common formation is squad column fire team wedge • Squad splits in two teams • Alpha Team • Bravo Team • Each team has a team leader that reports directly to squad leader

  5. Squad Column Fire Team Wedge

  6. Movement • When moving, keep your heads on a swivel (look all around for enemy) • Keep good distance, typically 5-10 meters apart • Use hand signals to communicate…stay silent and undetected!

  7. At the ObjectiveInitiating Contact • Two ways to initiate contact with enemy • Use suppressive fire on the enemy • Enemy fires at us

  8. Locate the Enemy • Enemy Size and Location • Squad leader assesses the ability of squad to attack the enemy • Should have a 3:1 friendly-to-enemy ratio

  9. Suppress the Enemy • One fire team lays down suppressive fire • Other fire team maneuvers around to attack the vulnerable flank of the enemy

  10. ATTACK! • Suppressing team (first team to make contact) shifts fire • Assault team uses violence of action and assaults the objective • Suppressing team lifts fire • Assault team moves through the objective and ensures all enemy are crushed

  11. Attack Demonstrated

  12. Consolidate and Reorganize • Security! 360 degrees around objective! • Enemy Prisoner of War/Aid and Litter Teams • Reports • Team leaders report to squad leader • Squad leader reports to platoon leader • Redistribute ammunition

  13. Practical Exercise • Situation: Caquetans have invaded AO Vandy and set up their Headquarters at the local Starbucks • Mission: Conduct a deliberate attack to interrupt Caquetan operations around Vanderbilt University

  14. Executing the Mission

  15. Attack Assault Team Suppressive Team

  16. Consolidate and Reorganize 360 Degree Security
