Plan for the preservation of digital content and archives in THUL Jiang Airong, Dong Li Tsinghua University Library EMANI Meeting GRENOBLE – 16 Oct, 2006
Agenda Pay attention to preservation and archives Research and application of METS A cataloging tool for digital preservation Local application of OAIS and DSpace
Pay attention to preservation and archives many kinds of digital content needed to preserve and archivein THUL: • “born-digital” materials for example: e-theses & dissertations, digital pictures • “scanned - digital” materials for example: ancient books, scriptures • “mirror sites - electron resources for example: Elsevier e-Journals, Springer e-Journals etc. (THU has more than 400 databases and 30 000 e-journals) “born digital” materials should clearly be given priority.
Research and application of METS Since 2003 • We chose METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) as our standard to encode “scanned - digital” materials for preservation ofmetadata and digital objects.
A cataloging tool for digital preservation Since 2004 • We have developed a Web-based XML Schema-driven Cataloging Tool for METS document creation and modification. • All the descriptive metadata, administrative metadata and structural metadata can be constructed. • The cataloging tool can be applicable for collection ofmany kinds. e.g. the Chinese Math Digital Library the Digital Library on the Historyof Machinery
A cataloging tool for digital preservation a cataloging tool based METS descriptive section administrative section structural section
Local application of OAIS and DSpace • Since 2006, we start to pay attention to preservation of e-journals and “born-digital” materials, including technical reports, working papers, teaching materials, degree dissertations, and so on.
Local application of OAIS and DSpace • We study OAIS reference model and plan to make the digital preservation workflow more standard. • Currently, we have made some testings on DSpace, because DSpace’s infrastructure conforms to OAISin the mass.
Local application of OAIS and DSpace • For resource ingest, DSpace is not so convenient for batch resource submission, we add a new function module (tool) for batch resource submission with Excel files. • we have ingested 150 000 e-journals records to DSpace by this tool.
Local application of OAIS and DSpace • For user access module, we have integrated the user authentication module with THU Library OPAC system, so that it’s more convenient for campus users to submit and access their research materials.
Next plan • THU Library buy one network storage equipment last month. • We plan to integrate our local storage to DSpace’s Archival Storage module, so that to provide storage support for preservation.
