Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) • Membership organization of community health centers (CHCs) delivering primary health care services to medically underserved Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
Asian American and Pacific Islander Population • Diverse in language (100 dialects) and ethnicity (49); • 59% limited English proficiency; • Access barriers to obtaining health care: 14% poverty & 17% uninsured; • Health disparity areas include diabetes, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and cancer. • 48% growth between 1990 & 2000;
Diabetes • AA and NHOPI adults in Hawaii: 2 times more likely to have diabetes than Caucasians. • Native Hawaiians: prevalence rates of up to 4 times higher for age-adjusted type 2 diabetes. • Japanese American men in Seattle: 2-3 times the prevalence rates of type 2 diabetes when compared to non-Hispanic whites.

Purpose • Clearinghouse for culturally and linguistically appropriate Diabetes Education Material (DEM) for AAPIs. • Create a forum to recruit, catalog and utilize the expertise of reviewers from the AAPI community. • To raise the bar for high-quality DEM and increase its availability.
