Beginning Tagalog 2 FLTA 104
The Power of Language Language allows us to get distance on ourselves so we can enjoy our selves and others. It helps us take a step back from the intensity of life to laugh. Language presents us with almost endless possibilities for humor. Almost every situation has the potential for humor. Thanks to language!
Tagalog Puns Q: Why didn't the man walk across the puddle of water? A: Because it was too big. ("Tubig" is "water" in Tagalog.)
Someone was drowning in a swimming pool, so he screamed for help. The lifeguard on-duty quickly grabbed a rope and threw it to him. Unfortunately, the rope didn't help because it wasn't too long. ("Tulong" is "help" in Tagalog.)
At 1:00 PM, I took some ice cream out of the freezer, but then I forgot about it. That was one hour ago, and I just realized that it's 2 now. ("Tunaw" is "melted" in Tagalog.)
Q: Do you know any languages that are spoken in India? A: Hindi ("Hindi" is Tagalog for "No". Hindi is also a language in India.)
Q: Why can't you eat salt on Sunday? A: Because it would be a sin. ("Asin" is "salt" in Tagalog.)
Alphabet/Word Exercise • Without using your books or notes, brainstorm a list of at least 15 terms associated with the Tagalog language and the Philippines. • Use 3-4 words from your list to write a Limerick. Basic Limerick form has 5 lines. The 1st and 2nd lines rhyme as well as 3rd and 4th lines. The 5th line rhymes with the first 2.
Halimbawa ng Limerick Mabait ang mga Pilipino. Kapareho ng mga kano. Masaya ang buong bayan. Kapag hindi napabayaan. Kano at Pilipino sa mundo namumuno. (Filipinos are good Similar to Americans The country is happy If it is not neglected Americans and Filipinos lead the world.)
Not only language give us distance from ourselves, but language can be used to analyze itself. Often, when we are talking with another person and do not understand them, we will say, “did you mean x or y?” In so doing, we are asking them to reflect on their prior use of certain words or phrase and to be more precise. This process also includes linguistic inference- when we understand what another person is intending to communicate by how they say something as well as by what they actually say.
Experiment the level of meaning you can experience through poetry Ang lahat ng bagay, may pakpak na lihim, pakpak na nag-akyat sa ating layunin, pakpak ang nagtaas ng gintong mithiin, pakpak ang nagbigay ng ilaw sa atin, pakpak ang naghatid sa tao sa hangin, at pakpak din naman ang taklob sa libing. Verses from PAKPAK By Jose Corazon de Jesus 1928 All things have secret wings, Wings to achieve our purpose, Wings to reach our highest ambitions, Wings to give us light, Wings to carry us on the wind, Wings to protect us in death. (English Translation)
