  4. Lesson 1: applications matter • Radical increases in bandwidth=new kinds of applications • New kinds of applications provide new business opportunities • 100Mbps seems to be an inflection point • End-to-end performance is crucial • Future applications will require Gbps

  5. Lesson 2: fiber deployment gaining momentum • Long haul fiber optic cable “glut” • Regional dark or dim fiber gaining • I-Light (Indiana) • I-WIRE (Chicago) • CENIC ONI (California) • Campuses turning to fiber • George Washington University (and others) • SCinet

  6. Lesson 3: networking realities • LANs are ahead of the curve • OEO is expensive • DWDM overwhelms Moore’s Law • Evolution of optical switching will be critical
