Sample Search/Application Idea #2 Scenario: Your little brother, who is in the fifth grade, has decided to play the trumpet in the school band. He has brought home his rented trumpet for the first time and is anxious to learn how it works. Unfortunately, band practice does not begin for another week and he wants to know something about his instrument now! (Oh, and he absolutely will not stop bugging you until you have agreed to help him.)

Application Activity: Composer Hall of Fame • Your assignment for this activity is to get to know a prominent composer and share what you have learned about him with the class through an informative and creative poster. • These posters will be displayed in the music room as the Composer Hall of Fame, available for friends and family to view during the Fine Arts Festival.
Composer Poster Requirements Your poster must include the following information: • Date of birth, date of death, and nationality of the composer • Musical period in which the composer worked (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century, etc.) • At least three interesting facts about the composer’s life (for example: Beethoven continued to compose even after losing his ability to hear) • List of at least five musical works written by the composer • Image of the composer
Composer Poster Requirements Your poster must also include an argument for why you think the composer should be included in the Composer Hall of Fame. Some questions to consider might be: • What impact did this composer have on the world of music? Did he change the way music was written, or the way it was viewed by the public? • What made this composer unique? How was he different from other composers of his time? • Why does this composer have a lasting place in history? What is it about his music that makes it popular even today?
Composer Poster Requirements Finally, your poster must include some element of creativity. Rather than simply stating the required information, find an interesting way to display it. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • Create a timeline of the composer’s life, including significant life events and dates of important compositions. • Write a fictional interview (based on fact) between you and the composer, having the composer answer questions about his life and music. • Design a newspaper article or program from a musical performance that might have appeared during the composer’s life, which highlights important aspects of his life and music.
Composer Poster Checklist Your Composer Poster will be graded based on the following checklist: • Appropriate use & citation of at least three sources – 5 points. • Correct spelling, grammar and punctuation – 3 points. • Date of birth, death, nationality, and musical period– 5 points. • Three interesting facts about the composer’s life – 10 points. • List of at least 5 works written by the composer – 5 points. • Image of the composer – 2 points. • Argument for the composer’s inclusion in the Composer Hall of Fame – 10 points. • Creative presentation – 10 points. Total Possible Points: 50
