  1. “Like Terms”, I Add ThemAdding Polynomials

  2. Like terms are terms that contain the same variables, with corresponding variables having the same power. Example: 3x2+4x+x2-2 The like terms in this expression are:

  3. Copy down the following expressions and circle the like terms. 1. 7x2+8x-2y+8-6x 2. 3x-2y+4x2-y 3. 6y+y2-3+2y2-4y3

  4. Check your answers. 1. 7x2+8x-2y+8-6x 2. 3x-2y+4x2-y 3. 6y+y2-3+2y2-4y3

  5. To simplify these expressions, you should combine these like terms by adding their coefficients. Rewrite the equations with the like terms combined.

  6. Check your answers. 1. 7x2+8x-2y+8-6x 2. 3x-2y+4x2-y 3. 6y+y2-3+2y2-4y3

  7. When adding polynomials, you also combine like terms. (2x2+3x-4) + (4x2+4x+8)

  8. You may add these polynomials vertically. Write each polynomial on a separate line, thus keeping them separate without using parentheses. Put like terms beneath each other, even if to do so you must rearrange the terms of a polygon. 2x2+3x-4 4x2+4x+8

  9. Then combine the like terms. 2x2+3x-4 4x2+4x+8 6x2+7x+4

  10. Or you may do this horizontally by writing the polynomial without the parentheses on one line. 2x2+3x-4+4x2+4x+8

  11. Then combine the like terms. 2x2+3x-4+4x2+4x+8 6x2+7x+4

  12. Work these on your paper using both methods. 1. (3x2+3x+3) + (4x2-2x+1) 2. (y2-8y+10) + (3y2+8y+10) 3. (3a3+7a-1) + (3a2+3a-4)

  13. Check your answers. The horizontal method. 1. 3x2+3x+3 + 4x2-2x+1

  14. The vertical method. 3x2+3x+3 4x2- 2x+1

  15. The horizontal method. • 2. y2-8y+10 + 3y2+8y+10

  16. The vertical method. y2-8y+10 3y2+8y+10 20

  17. The horizontal method. • 3. (3a3+7a-1) + (3a2+3a-4) 3a3+3a2+10a-5

  18. The vertical method. 3a3 +7a-1 3a2 +3a-4 3a3+3a2+10a-5
