What Education Will Do For You Planning A High School Education
Basics to Remember about Class Scheduling • Know the graduation requirements and specifically required courses • 4 credits in English • Freshman English • Sophomore Writing & Oral Communication • At least one survey course is highly recommended • 3 credits in Mathematics (4 recommended) • 2 credits in Science (3 recommended) • 2 credits in Social Science (3 recommended) • United States Studies and Constitution tests Planning A High School Education
Basics to Remember about Class Scheduling • 2 credits in Foreign Language or Fine Arts • Same foreign language or • Fine Arts: Art, Music, Industrial Technology • 4 credits in Physical Education • Freshman Wellness (Health) • Waiver applies only to juniors and seniors • Interscholastic athletics, marching band • Very limited independent studies available to students with advanced course overload Planning A High School Education
Basics to Remember about Class Scheduling • ½ credit in Consumer Education • Senior year preferred • Proficiency Test offered each fall available to any student not currently enrolled in course • 4½ credits in Electives • Electives are any course that doesn’t fit in any other category (e.g. a 4th math credit, a business course) • Use electives to explore potential areas of interest Planning A High School Education
ISU Course Options • Dual Enrollment • High School and College credit • Pay ISU tuition, but not fees • Juniors and seniors preferred • Application required • Fall deadline: February 1 • Spring deadline: September 1 • Registration in April Planning A High School Education
ISU Course Options • High School Credit courses • ISU course, high school credit only • No tuition • Requires U-High faculty recommendation • ISU instructor must accept student into their class • Fall deadline: 3rd day of semester • Spring deadline: December 15 Planning A High School Education
Heartland Community College Courses • Dual credit • Tuition and fees paid to Heartland • Application required • Approval required Planning A High School Education
Area Vocational Center • Multiple class period, hands on • Section 1, 7:30-9:14 • Section 2, 9:50-11:28 • Section 3, 12:31-2:15 • Not all courses meet each section • Application required • Most classes have college credit or certification available Planning A High School Education
Illinois Virtual High School Courses • Counselor approval required for courses not offered at U-High • Department chair approval required for courses offered at U-High • $125.00 tuition fee per semester • Must complete request form AND register on-line at www.ivhs.org • Requires good personal discipline • Grade of C or better strongly recommended prior to approval of continued IVHS courses Planning A High School Education
Independent Study • Designed for students desiring to study a course not offered at U-High • Students must find a faculty sponsor • Must dedicate a minimum of five hours per week • Requires administrative approval Planning A High School Education
Overview of Scheduling Process • January 18: Material Distribution in Class Meetings • Read and discuss the course handbook as a family • Review progress reports, report cards, transcript • Discuss the appropriate course selection with teachers and counselor • Plan carefully • Make course selections • Obtain teacher approval signatures for any course with a prerequisit • January 26: Course selection deadline Planning A High School Education
Overview of Scheduling Process • February and March • Administrative decisions • Master Schedule construction • April • Student schedule creation by class • By appointment, individual meeting • Since you create your own schedule, it is expected that changes should be rare Planning A High School Education
