Community Service Plant High School
What is Community Service? • Community Service is defined as identifying and addressing a social issue in the community. This requires students to look beyond themselves and reach out to an issue faced by our society today (i.e. poverty, abuse, elderly citizen). These hours will meet the requirement for the Florida Academic Scholars Award through Bright Futures. • Volunteer Service is defined as assisting where needed and does not necessarily address a social issue. Although these hours are not recorded on the transcript, students can keep a log of these activities for use when applying for college, job applications, awards and scholarships other than the Bright Futures.
Unacceptable Community Service for Bright Futures • Family related activities • Court mandated community service • Service for the sole benefit of a religious house of worship and/or its congregation. • Service for promoting a political candidate • Co-curricular activities that are course requirements • An activity where there is no leader or responsible adult on site to evaluate and confirm student performance.

A proposal for each project must be submitted. • Students must summarize, evaluate and reflect on their experience using the designated form. • Students should keep copies of all documentation that is submitted to the schools. • Projects done during the summer before beginning 9th grade will be considered for the 75 hour requirement if a proposal is submitted and approved by the high school the student plans to attend. • Students must perform the service during non-school hours. • Service must be for a non-profit organization and students may not be compensated either financially or with some other material benefit. • Fundraising may count as community service if all funds raised are donated to address a social issue in the community.
How to get started… • Go to http://plant.mysdhc.org/Guidance • On the right hand side, there are a list of “printable forms” that students need to print out PRIOR to starting their community service. • Bring the Proposal form to be signed by the counselor during Guidance-to-go (last 20 min. of 1st lunch, first 20 min. of 2nd lunch). This form MUST BE SIGNED AND APPROVED BEFORE THE STUDENT BEGINS ANY COMMUNITY SERVICE .
8th Grade Students • Incoming Freshman: If students wish to begin community service prior to the start of their freshman year of high school, they must come to PHS in the summer and get their proposal signed by the Counselor or Assistant Principal on campus.
Completing Hours • Once the approved community service hours are completed, students must bring THREE required forms to Guidance-to-go: • Signed Proposal • Log of Hours signed by Community Service Supervisor • Completed Reflection • Once turned in, the community service forms should be processed and inputted in the computer within one week.
