Academic Vocabulary Steps 1-6
Step 1 • Provide a description, explanation, or example of the new term. • When working with ELL students the teacher should provide any cognates if possible. • It is important to provide a visual representation of the word.
Step 2 • Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words. • ELL students may write their definition in their native language.
Step 3 • Ask students to construct a picture, symbol, or graphic of the word. • This activity is critical to ELL students.
Step 4 • Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their notebooks.
Activities to deepen the students understanding of the terms: • Free Association • Classifying Terms • Concept Circles • Semantic Mapping • Analogies • Metaphors • Vocabulary Word Box • Comparing Terms • Venn Diagram • Sentence Stems

Step 5 • Periodically ask students to discuss the terms with one another.
Interaction deepens the understanding of terms! • Turn and Talk • Think-Pair-Share • Review their descriptions and pictures with partners. • Talk about new information they have learned. • Look for clarification • Share back with the whole class. • Clear up any misconceptions or confusion!!
Step 6 • Involve students periodically in games that allow them to play with terms.
