We’ve learned from the previous lesson that: Working hard will make me successful. Some people think that working hard every day is the best way to succeed in life. Those people believe that each person controls his or her own future.
They also think that diligence and skill are the keys to success. For me, I prefer to have good luck. Some people, however, think that luck is more important than skill. They are superstitious. They try to improve their luck.
Do you remember what a superstition is? A superstition is a belief about luck. A very common one is the belief that number “13” brings bad luck. That is why most high-rise hotels don’t have a 13th floor.
It’s because most guestsrefuse to stay on the 13th floor. My number is 10, not 13. Some athletes won’t wear number 13 on their uniforms.
The date Friday the 13th is considered to be extremely unlucky. If you break a mirror, you will have bad luck for seven years. There are many other superstitions about bad luck. Walking under a ladder will bring you bad luck.
Another superstition about bad luck is opening an umbrella indoors. Another one isseeing a black cat walking across your path.
Those are superstitions in Western countries. People in Eastern countries are also superstitious. There are many superstitions for Asian people, too. In Korea, students don’t wash their hair on the day they have a test.Do you know why?

What do people do to get good luck? There are various ways for people to bring good luck to themselves.Westerners cross their fingers. Many people where a good-luck charm.
Superstitious people believe that one of the best ways is to find a four-leafed clover. It’s a kind of grass that usually has three leaves. Very rarely it has four.
Another way to bring good luck to you is finding a penny. You may also carry a rabbit’s foot as agood-luck charm.
Another saying is “People who are lucky playing cards will be unlucky at love. The opposite superstition is also true: “Unlucky at cards, lucky at love.”
People in Eastern countries also carry good-luck charms. In Japan, people believe that a cat figurine and an owl figurine will bring good luck to them.They will be wealthy and happy.
