  1. Racism, Prejudice, Stereotypes

  2. Racism • Racism = the belief that all members of a race have a specific trait, for good or for bad • Ex: African Americans are 2-3 times more likely to be pulled over and searched [while driving], but no more likely to be engaged in any criminal activity than white Americans.

  3. Prejudice • Prejudice = a premade opinion NOT based on actual experience • Ex: Lots of people have good or bad opinions of the President even though they have never met him and do not really know him. • People are being mean to you at school but they’ve never actually met you or hung out with you.

  4. Stereotypes • Stereotype = widely held but oversimplified, outdated, or incorrect belief in a person, thing, or group of people • Ex: • All black people can dance well. • All Mexicans are lazy and like beans. • Women are soft and weak. • All Asians are smart and good at school.

  5. Why the Jews? • Anti-Semitism, or hatred of Jews, is based on their ethnic and religious heritage • Anti-Semitism is like racism: It doesn’t make much sense, is usually based on stereotypes and causes people to act irrationally or even violently. • Antisemitism may be manifested in many ways, from individual attacks to to violent mobs and even military attacks on entire Jewish communities. • Extreme instances of persecution include: • First Crusade of 1096 • the Spanish Inquisition • The Holocaust under Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany.

  6. RacismBefore the War • 1933 - The first concentration camp is erected at Dachau • 1934 - Hitler becomes the leader of Germany • Selling Jewish newspapers is forbidden • 1935 - Jews are stripped of their citizenship • Nazis persecute more people that do not agree with Hitler’s philosophy • 1936 - Nazis boycott Jewish-owned businesses • Olympics are held in Germany; signs against Jews are hidden until the completion of the games • 1938 - “Kristallnacht”, or the Night of Broken Glass, causes terror throughout the Jewish community, Nazis terrorized the Jews and 30,000 Jews were arrested on this one night • Jews required to carry ID cards and all Jewish passports are marked with a “J” • Jews are no longer able to head businesses or attend social events, such as plays and concerts • All Jewish children are sent to Jewish schools • Jewish businesses are shut down • Jews must hand over drivers’ licenses and car registration, as well as jewels and securities

  7. During and After the War • 1939 • WWII begins Hitler orders curfew on Jews • All radios must be relinquished to the police • All Jews must wear a yellow Star of David • 1940 • Jews forced to move from their homes into ghettos Jews are deported to Poland and the first mass murders begin • 1943 • About 80-85 percent of all the Jews that will die during the Holocaust have already been exterminated • 1944 • Hitler takes over Hungary, where he sends 12,000 Jews to Auschwitz each day to be murdered • 1945 • Hitler is defeated • Concentration camps are emptied
