I. The Continental Army • Around 20,000 soldiers formed the first American Army • Ethan Allen and the Green Mtn. Boys defeat the British at Ft. Ticonderoga • They captured the Artillery at the Ft.
II. Bunker Hill • Battle is fought on Breeds Hill • Gen. Howe sent his 2,200 troops up breeds hill to meet American Militiamen • Colonel Prescott said “don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” • B. The British won the Battle but at a cost of Over 1000 troops, around 400 Militia were killed
III. Last attempt at peace • The Olive Branch Petition was sent to London and the King refused it • He announced British ships would block ports, and German Mercenaries + English soldiers would be arriving to fight the Americans • The guns from Ticonderoga were hauled by Knox to Dorchester heights • The British retreated from Boston under Gen.Howe

The Declaration • Adopted on July 4, 1776 written by Thomas Jefferson • John Hancock signed it first in large letters and said “There, King George should be able to read that” • The closing passage read “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
