3. What is an Insect The insects are in the class Insecta, which is the largest group of organisms on Earth. Insects live in just about every type on environment that you can think of. Insects are very adaptable and very diverse, just think about the cockroach . Cockroaches are just about everywhere. Did you know that there are about 90,000 species in the United States and Canada back in the early 90’s. Most insects are small and range from 0.1 millimeter to about 30 centimeters in length or wing span.

4. What is an Insect Insects are not all bad. They have their role in the world, such as we do. Some insect aide in the growing of crops by preying on other insects that like to eat the crops. Some like bumble bee help in the pollination of flowers and the making of honey. Other insects have even been used by archeologists in the removal of organic material(flesh) for bone in order to study them without harming the bone

5. What Body Parts do Insects Have? Insects have three basic body parts: • Head • Thorax • Abdomen • Exoskeleton Click on either body part for detailed characteristics Head Thorax Abdomen

6. The Head The head is attached to the thorax. Some insects have big heads others have small heads. Almost every insect has a set of compound eyes, a set of jaws or mouth and a pair of antennae attached to the head. Most insects have compound eyes, which is a set of eyes made up of thousand individual lenses. All the lenses work as one, collecting visual data, which as a whole, allows the insect to see. It is like looking through a kaleidoscope. The head is the main source for collecting information about the environment. The insect uses the antennae to feel, taste and smell their surroundings.

7. The Thorax The thorax is the middle part of the body. This is were the legs are attached to, 3 pair to be exact. The thorax is also where the wings are connected. Some insects have one set of wings, while others have 2 sets of wings.

8. The Abdomen The abdomen is the largest part of most insects body. It is the body part in which most of the organs are located in.

9. Exoskeleton An exoskeleton is a rigid external skeleton, which means that it is on the outside of the body. All insects have a rigid, chitinous exoskeleton that protects them from predators and injury. The exoskeleton also provides a support base for the muscles to attach to. One of the most important functions that the exoskeleton provides is that of water proofing. The exoskeleton acts as a water proofer by preventing the loss of water from the body. The exoskeleton varies a lot in thickness and toughness amongst the different type of insects.
