Progress to-date: • RSEU set up with a core team of 5 staff supported by 3 consultants. • Workshops held to increase awareness of road safety activities. • RSAs and Crash Reduction Reports prepared and supported by RSEU staff. • Road Safety Manuals prepared to illustrate road safety engineering, road safety at roadworks and roadside hazard management.
Establishment of Road Safety Unit. • Core team has not yet reached critical mass. • Requires further support. • Message slowly filtering through DGH and Regions. • Insufficient data to support firm accident reduction plan. • Action strategy to be developed to give direction to remaining stages of development. • Allocate budget in accordance with strategy. • Increase cross agency co-operation.

Road Safety Manuals • Manuals can be used as guidelines for future designs. • Risk of them being too detailed and not easy to use. • Manuals need to be adopted at the highest level. • Series needs expanding to include topics such as Road Safety Audits, Traffic Calming and Speed Management.
Other initiatives IRSMS • Ensure that requirements for road safety engineers is collected at the time of the crash. Input is required by DGH.
Future Initiatives ? • Concentrates on other agencies. • Includes vulnerable users needs (i.e. school zones). • Produce new Traffic Signs and Line Marking Manual • Education programmes. • Crash analysis for South Kalimantan corridor. • Demonstration projects.
