2. The Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship • This program recognizes and rewards excellence for academic achievement and vocational preparation. • The program includes an annual award of up to $2,000 per year, a gold seal affixed to the graduate's diploma, a medallion to be worn during commencement exercises and a frameable certificate.

3. Where can it be used? • This renewable scholarship may be used at a Florida public university, community college, area vocational center or accredited private post-secondary vocational, technical, trade or business school.

4. How do you earn a FGSS? • 3.0 unweighted grade point average. • Complete a minimum of three vocational credits in a "sequential program of study" with a 3.5 unweighted GPA. • Earn the minimum required test score (SAT, ACT, or CPT). These are usually taken Jr. or Sr. year. • Submit an application during the last year of high school and annually thereafter. • NEW REQUIREMENT - Perform at least 30 hours of community service.

5. And 2 other requirements… • Graduate! You may receive early notification of your award status during your last term of high school; however, if you do not graduate, you will not receive the award! • Stay Clean! You must not be found guilty of, or plead no contest to, a felony charge.

6. YOU can DO THIS!!!!! • One of the best things about the Florida Gold Seal Scholarship is that there is no set limit on how many students can receive this grant. • As many as qualify can use these funds to continue their education in whatever capacity they wish, university, community college or trade school

7. Start here in THIS class… • You can only make 1 C as a semester grade in Culinary Arts and still qualify for FGSS. • Here are the scenarios • 1C and 5A = 3.66 • 1B and 5A = 3.83 • 2B and 4A = 3.66 • 3B and 3A – 3.5 • Anything less is not acceptable and will ruin your chances of earning FGSS.

8. What is community service? • Community service hours are unpaid activities—time given freely of one’s own will and not because the member is required to do so. • Community service is designed to improve the quality of life for our community. • Community service can occur in such fields as health care, child care, literacy training, education (including tutuorial services), welfare, food service, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement.

9. Examples of Community Service 1. Tutoring other students 2. Working as a meal volunteer for senior citizens 3. Babysitting during church services (unpaid) 4. Serving as a Sunday School teacher/assistant 5. Providing rides to services for those without vehicles 6. Being a library volunteer 7. Working with Habitat for Humanity 8. Serving food to others 9. Working in a food pantry 10. Vacation Bible school volunteer 11. Volunteering to help at a festival 12. Working as a blood drive volunteer 13. Participating in a Relay for Life activity 14. Serving as a volunteer at the local hospital 15. Serving as a Big Brother/Big Sister 16. Becoming Red Cross safety certified 17. Participating in a March of Dimes activity 18. Christmas caroling at the senior citizen home 19. Adopt-a-highway clean-up days 20. Serving as an EMT/volunteer fireman 21. Bell ringer for Salvation Army 22. Coaching Little League/other unpaid activities

10. Keep track of your hours • Get the appropriate form from guidance and keep a log of your hours. • I will keep a chart in my records for all community service hours you earn as a part of Culinary Arts. • However, you must get the form to me first and remind me to update your form once the hours have been obtained. • You need to acquire 30 hours to get this scholarship.
