  1. Welcome Parents! I am Mrs. Sermons and I teach your child Computer Science “I can’t respond to emails today. Something crashed on my computer and the mouse is missing!” (Cartoon web address on last slide)

  2. My information: • Email: tcsermons@caddoschools.org(on handout.) • This is my 28th year at Byrd. • Computer Science 2 is offered as a dual credit class. • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certified. • I also sponsor the Z-Club and Literary Rally

  3. Class Supplies are listed on the handout. • The class fee is $5. You may pay on line at www.payforit.netor go to the www.cebyrd.com, the Byrd website, and follow the link. Students may also pay in class. They are due by September 10th. • The senior counselor is Amanda Byrd and the junior counselor is Tamiko Lacy. • You may sign up for Byrd email updates at ptsa.byrdblast@gmail.com

  4. Tutoring, Make Up Procedures: • I will be available immediately after school for tutoring. • Make ups will be on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings (7:45) • He or she should make it up during the current week, or the next. After that, the next week is 10% off, after that 20% off.

  5. Computer science I: • This is mainly a projects based course. Students will write programs and turn them in. • All programming is to be done in class. However the students are encouraged to bring the instructions and a hard copy home to plan and work on. We only have around 50 minutes each day in which to type it in. • Any formal assignments will be for a grade. • They will also have tests. • Computer science II: • Students will follow the syllabus and have tests.

  7. Students learn by doing. The most powerful thing that you can do to help your child to be successful is to make sure he or she stays on top of assignments. Everyone can do well in my class, if they do the work assigned. I don’t check it everyday, so it is easy to get in the habit of not doing it. It is a matter of the first layer of understanding vs. learning. We want to encourage good habits. So, please make sure he or she has the time and a place to complete it.

  8. When are we ever going to use this? My answer? EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE! Computer science is math based about logic, problem solving, reasoning, and patterns. These are skills that I want your children to use to learn. I want to teach them to think-I can’t “learn” them. I want what’s best for your child.
