“Music used to be about what you could achieve for yourself independently. Now it’s about what you can conceive.” – Peter Gabriel – He was talking about digital audio and music technology opening up various new paths of possibilities.
What does today’s music maker look like? Everyone today can be a music-maker. Millions of people use their computers to sample, loops, program, compose and record digital music. This course will look at some of the technology used to create digital music. You will also have the chance to reproduce songs as well as create your own original music!

Growth of Technology Music technology has grown by leaps and bounds since that time. For example, a hundred years ago, it would have taken 9 shellac disks to store Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Today, a single DVD could hold every one of his compositions, and you could watch the orchestra playing them – and follow the score!

How did we get to where we are today? The Gramophone was invented by Emile Berliner. These disks held 2 minutes of recorded sound. Edison invented the first dictation machine 1877 1887 1889 Columbia Records is founded (then known as Columbia Phonograph Company).
How did we get to where we are today? Record sales dip as people can listen to free music through the emergence of commercial radio. The music business begins to escalate. 1890 1920 1913 Edison gets rid of his cylinders and begins using plastic disks played by a diamond needle.
How did we get to where we are today? Microphones are first used to record audio. Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie becomes the first motion picture complete with a soundtrack of dialog, music, and sound effects. First vinyl disks appear. This format does not take off until 1947 when it is more durable and can hold 25 minutes a side. 1928 1937 1929 1947 First magnetic tape recorders appear. Audio is now rewritable. Thanks to Les Paul and Leo Fender, solid body electric guitars arrive on the music scene, reducing feedback. • First amplified guitars appear.
How did we get to where we are today? Stereo recording becomes standardized, ending the mono age. Synthesizers change the ways that sounds are created. 1957 1967 1962 1972 Compact cassettes replace vinyl as the dominant form of recorded music. First personal mobile audio device is invented.
How did we get to where we are today? CD format is finalized but does not enter the mainstream until the 1980’s. Internet and World Wide Web begin a worldwide network for sharing. 1977 1987 1981 MIDI becomes standardized worldwide. This enables electronic instruments and computers to communicate with each other.
