State flower-the Dogwood • the dogwood became the state flower on march 15 1981. • The dogwood leaves can grow up to 5 in long. • The dogwoods scientific name is Cornus Florida • The four pedals are also called bracts. • Wood from a dogwood tree was used to make Jesus's cross. • The red berries that appear in fall can be up to 8 in long.

Carolina Lily The Carolina lily was declared the state wildflower in 2003 It grows 2-3 feet tall The pedals bend backwards and fold over at the tips It blooms in the summer but can bloom as late as October Lilum michauxil is its scientific name As you can see in this picture of the Carolina lily it Is a beautiful orange color with brown spots.

The Pine Tree • The pine tree was considers the state tree in 1963 • There are 35 types in this state • There are 120 types in the world • It grows in colder climates • It has needle shaped leaves that squirrels and birds eat • They can grow up to be 45 to 135 feet tall • They are the most recognizable • They can live 100 to 1,ooo years old • The common pine trees are the white pine and the sugar pine • Pine tree wood can be used for window frames and wood doors

The Venus Fly Trap • The Venus fly trap became the state carnivorous plant in 2005 • It has jaw like leaves • It is a death trap for insects • Trigger hairs =sensors • It scientific name is dionaea muscipula • If an insect brushes against the trigger hairs more than 2 times its jaw like leaves will shut • Cilare hairs prevent insects from escaping

The Fraser Fur • The Fraser fur became the state Christmas tree in 2005 • Its scientific abies fraseri • It has been chosen 10 times since 1971 as the white house Christmas tree • It was named after john Fraser who explored the Appalachians in 1700’s • The trunk can reach 18in diameter • The Fraser fur is one of the 3 most popular Christmas trees
