Teaching objectives • To understand about the green house gases. • To undertstand about the infrared radiations. • To understand about the air pollution. • To understand about the green house effect. • To understand about the global warming. • To understand about the effects of global warming.
Green house • Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. • Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun • The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. • This causes the greenhouse to heat up.
Green house gases Any gas that absorbs infra-red radiation in the atmosphere. water vapour Nitrous oxide (N2O) O O C C O O Halogenated Chlorofluoro carbons (HCFCs) Carbon dioxide (CO2) methane (CH4) Ozone (O3) Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
Green house effect Carbondioxide present in the atmosphere absorbs infrared radiations reflected from the surface of the earth and heats up the atmosphere. This heating up of atmosphere by carbondioxide in the air is called green house effect.
Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere behave much like the glass panes in a greenhouse.
Importance of the greenhouse effect Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual.
Global warming Because of Green house effect the average temperature of the earth increases and this is known as Global warming
Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases.
Impacts of global warming • Droughts • Floods • Level Rising temperatures of oceans and the sea • Tornadoes • Hurricanes • The melting of mountain glaciers • The reduction of snow cover • Dying coral reefs • Coastal erosion • Loss of coastal ecosystems • Extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals.
Level Rising of oceans and the sea Hurricanes
Coastal erosion In 1999 Dying coral reefs In 2004
Tornado Melting of mountain Glaciers
The melting of mountain glaciers Arctic ice belts are melting To view the video of Glacier melting click here
The melting of mountain glaciers In 1859 In 2001
The reduction of snow cover In 1928 In 2004
Extra warming may cause problems for plants In 2002 In 1985
