Early Life • Born: April 3, 1367 • Parents: John of Gaunt and Blanche of Lancaster • Born at Bolingbroke Castle in Lincolnshire • Married Mary de Bohun in 1379 • Eldest surviving son of John of Gaunt • Close friends with his cousin Richard the II • Not in line for the throne
Richard II • Richard II was the son of Edward III • Cousin of Henry IV • Rose to power in 1377 • John of Gaunt (Henry IV’s father) was a regent to the young king • After the death of John of Gaunt Richard exiled Henry IV
Usurpation of the Crown • After being exiled Henry IV raised an army in France to go against Richard II • Began as simple quest to take back property • Evolved into stealing of the crown • Imprisoned Richard II • Usurped the crown from Richard II and from Edmund Moritmer • Would later lead to the War of the Roses
Rebellions • Henry IV was unpopular because he ended the war with France • Percy Rebellion: Henry defeats the rebel army and hangs the leaders publicly • Epiphany Rising: Attempt to rein Richard II as King once again, also defeated
Accomplishments • Ended the war with France although this caused some anger among some of his kingdom • United England and Ireland by being the ruler of both countries
Death of King Henry IV • Suffered from a disfiguring skin disease (possibly leprosy or psoriasis) • Suffered acute attacks of an illness (possibly epilepsy or a cardiovascular disease) • Died in March 1413 after a final attack of the illness
Legacy • Began the Lancastrian Dynasty • Provided the male heir Henry V who later led a victorious battle at Agincourt
