  1. Science Fair #2 Purpose, Variables, Materials

  2. Purpose • Should explain what you want to find out. • Why are you completing the project? • Briefly describe what you will be doing. • It should mention your control or comparison group. • It should include a key phrase such as: • To determine • To find out • To figure out

  3. Purpose Statement Examples • The purpose of this project isto determine if using different liquids will affect the growth of plants. This is tested by using 1 cup of water, 1 cup of Gatorade, and 1 cup of soda on 3 different plants of the same species. The control is the plant watered with water. • The purpose of this project is to determine if the addition of different nutrients affects the strength of bubbles. This is tested by adding 2mL of salt, sugar, cornstarch, and olive oil to 4 different samples of soap. The control is the bubble solution with no nutrients added.

  4. Independent Variable • The part of the experiment that is manipulated or changed by the scientist or person performing the experiment. • There should only be one independent variable!

  5. Controlled Variable (the Control) • The part of the experiment that is NOT being changed or tested. • It is used as a comparison to see if the independent variable affected the results.

  6. Dependent Variable • The part of the experiment we measure to see if the independent variable caused a change. • We need to be able to measure if there was a change!

  7. Can you identify the variables? • Project description: A student has 3 fig plants. They were wondering if a fig plant would grow taller if they used water, Gatorade, or soda. They used ½ cup of each liquid and gave the plants each liquid twice a week. They recorded the heights of each plant every Friday for a month. • Independent Variable: the different liquid type • Dependent Variable: height of the plant • Controlled Variable: same type of plant, same amount of liquid, same amount of times the plants are “watered”

  8. Materials List • A bulleted list that includes all the materials for your project. • Includes measurements • No capital letters in the beginning unless it’s a proper noun. • No punctuation need because it is a list. • Example: • – The following list of supplies is needed for this investigation. • 50mL of hot water • 50mL of cold water • 2 - 150mL graduated cylinders • triple-beam balance • masking tape

  9. Next Step • Write a purpose statement for your project. • Make a materials list of everything you will need. • Will you be able to get all of the materials? • Think about your variables. • Due date: Monday September 16
