  2. 5th January 1066 the king of England, Edward the Confessor, died without any children. There were three people claiming to be the next king of England. • What happened next?

  3. Harold Godwinesson was chosen King by leading noblemen of all England; and on the same day Harold was crowned with great ceremony by Alfred, Archbishop of York. • What happened next?

  4. William and Harald prepared their invasion fleets. Harold Godwineson prepared his defences and waited. William threatened the South Coast, while Harald Hardraada threatened the North. • What happened next? • What would you do in if you were in Harold’s shoes?

  5. The wind was blowing in the wrong direction, so William waited. On the 20th September Harald Hardraada arrived at the mouth of the River Tyne with more than 500 ships. They sailed up the River Ouse and fought a battle with 2 brothers, Earl Edwin and Morcar. After a long fight the English fled. Many were killed. • What happened next? • What would Harold have to do?

  6. Harold was now in a desperate position. After the long wait on the South Coast he had just sent his soldiers and sailors home. He now had to gather his army together again; march north, defeat the Norwegians and return south before the wind changed and allowed William to invade. • What happened next?

  7. King Harold met the Norwegians unawares. There was a day of fierce fighting. Harald Hardraada and Earl Tosti were killed. The rest of the Norwegians either drowned or burnt and only 24 ships returned to Norway. This was a great victory for Harold against on of the great warriors of the time. • What happened next? • Harold has won a great victory. Was his position now stronger or weaker than before the invasion?

  8. 2 days later the wind changed along the south coast and Williams’s invasion fleet set sail. It landed in Sussex the next morning. Just think how Harold must have felt when he heard the news! • HAROLD Vs WILLIAM: WHO WILL WIN?
