BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Welcome to the Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students(BUSM) training course developed at the Division of Urology - UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The information contained within will provide the trainee with a set of instructional teaching tools to develop essential skills for proficiency in basic surgical techniques with a focus on urologic procedures. We have designed the course to teach the trainee surgical techniques while providing feedback on skill development. In our experience, we have recognized that feedback is a critical component to learning hands-on methods and is often left out of traditional training courses. We hope that you enjoy the course and find the teaching modalities informative and useful. Using this course It is recommended that you view this entire presentation before proceeding to the videos or beginning your skills training. Follow the instructions for using the training course carefully. Each section will fully describe how to use the course. This course was developed by Joseph G. BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students BUSM Training Course Overview Overall Info We have designed our course to model normal learning behaviors. We do this by having the student become aware of the skills to learn, practice them, receive feedback and have further practice after receiving feedback. Please follow the modules to take the course, each will describe the steps to follow. The modules should be taken over multiple sessions in order to allow for maximum results. Instructions Before Beginning The modules include the skills that need to be learned in this course, both modules will include the same skills. Module #1 is pre-feedback and module #2 is post-feedback. The skills you will learn include 1. Knot Tying and 2. Suturing. Each module will have the trainee learn these skills in phases that are explained within the individual videos for each module. Feedback Trainees will receive feedback after completing module #1. Feedback will be provided to each trainee in the form of an edited personalized training video that will critique your actual performance. The video will be accessible on the course website. After you have reviewed your video feedback you should complete module #2.
Module #1 BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Module #1 Overview This is phase 1 of training. In this phase of the training the trainee will watch the videos that correspond with the skills below. After watching the video, follow the instructions and practice the skills modeled in the videos. Once you feel you have mastered the skill, you will record yourself performing the skills following the instructions below. This video will be used for scoring and evaluation purposes. The trainee will then use the feedback provided to undergo module # 2 of the course. Instructions for completing module #1 1) Watch video for a given skill 2) Corresponding with each video will be a specific amount of practice time allowed, use that time to practice skill 3) Once finished practicing all skills below, then record a video for skill testing Links to Videos (click to view) Skill 1: Knot tying 1 and 2 handed instrument tie Skill 2: Suturing baseball stitch subcuticular stitch
BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Module #1 - Skills Testing Overview Now that you have finished practicing and learning all the skills required for this course, you may proceed to the skills testing component of the course for Module #1. Do this by following the instructions below. Instructions for making the skill movie 1) Turn camera on and select the video setting by moving the slider on the top of the camera to the middle position 2) Position the camera over the field such that both hands are in view 3) Requirements for testing of each skill are listed below, please read first before continuing 4) Once ready, and with one attempt only, record yourself doing the skill 5) Begin recording by pressing the button on the top right of the camera. (It will be facing you on the left) 6) Before proceeding with the skill , state your name and the skill you will be performing 7) Once finished, press the same button to finish recording. 8) Move next skill and repeat steps 2 - 7 9) Once finished with all skills, advance to the next slide to view instructions for video transfer to the computer Testing Requirements for Each Skill Skill #1: Instrument Tie – Please tie four consecutive square knots Skill #2: Two Hand Knot - Please tie six consecutive square knots Skill #3: One Hand Knot – Please tie six consecutive square knots Skill #4: Over and over suture – Please suture for a distance of 10 cm Skill #5: Subcuticular suture – Please suture for a distance of 5 cm
BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Module #1 - Skills Testing Overview Now that you have finished recording the 5 basic urological skills, you must transfer the videos to the computer to receive feedback. Instructions for uploading your skill videos to the website 1) Turn off the camera by pressing the power button located on the top 2) Open the side of the camera marked battery/memory card 3) You will see too black bars, one on top of the other. The memory card is the smaller one. Press it to release. 4) Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into the usb reader attached to the computer. 5) Find your video files on the memory card and transfer them to the folder on the desktop named “BUSM to be reviewed.” Make sure to label each of the files ex//RWJohnsonSkill1 6) Once all 5 videos have been uploaded, eject the memory card from the computer. 7) Return the memory card to the camera Remember to upload and label each skill Skill #1: Instrument Tie – Please tie four consecutive square knots Skill #2: Two Hand Knot - Please tie six consecutive square knots Skill #3: One Hand Knot – Please tie six consecutive square knots Skill #4: Over and over suture – Please suture for a distance of 10 cm Skill #5: Subcuticular suture – Please suture for a distance of 5 cm
BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Reviewing Feedback Overview As stated on the previous page, video feedback will provided after completing module #1. The video feedback should be carefully reviewed. The video will include a critique of the trainee's skill testing results from module #1. Please keep in mind that this feedback is intended to help you improve your surgical skills and has been designed to help you for module #2. Instructions for reviewing video feedback 1) Locate the folder labeled “BUSM Feedback” on the desktop 2) Locate the folder with your name, double click the video file to view 3) Review your score sheet that highlights the elements of the skills performed 4) Once finished with above, move onto module #2
BUSM Basic Urological Skills for Medical Students Module #2 Overview In this phase of the training the trainee will have already completed module #1 skills testing and will have reviewed the feedback video. After reviewing the feedback video, please complete Skills Testing Module #2 and record yourself doing the skills again. Instructions for completing module #2 1) Review video feedback and scoring sheet you received to assess your skills from module 1 2) If necessary, review module #1 skill videos again and use practice time according to module 1 of BUSM 3) Once ready, proceed to the next slide for skill testing for Module #2
