Introduction to Alternate ACCESS for ELLs™Series 100 (2011-12)The Alternate ACCESS for ELLs was initially developed by a team led by Craig A. Albers, Ph.D., at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in collaboration with the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) on behalf of the WIDA Consortium. Funds were made available through a 2007 U.S. Department of Education Enhanced Assessment Grant award to OSSE. The assessment is currently undergoing further development at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with WIDA.

What is Alternate ACCESS for ELLs? • Is a new test developed specifically for students identified as English language learners with significant cognitive disabilities • Is substantially different from the version that was piloted in certain WIDA Consortium states prior to February 2011 • For 2011-12, will be available in all WIDA states except: AK, AL, GA, IL, NC, NH, PA, WY WIDA Consortium
What is Alternate ACCESS for ELLs? • Will be available in four grade-level clusters for 2012: Grades 1–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12 • Is a paper and pencil test • Is individually administered WIDA Consortium
Purpose of Alternate ACCESS for ELLs • Provides ELLs with significant cognitive disabilities an opportunity to demonstrate their English language proficiency: • in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing • in four English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards • social and instructional language • the language of language arts • the language of mathematics • the language of science WIDA Consortium
Who should take the Alternate ACCESS for ELLS? • Only ELLs with significant cognitive disabilities. Typically that includes students that have one or more of the existing categories of disabilities under IDEA (e.g.; intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, etc.) • Students whose cognitive impairments may prevent them from attaining grade level achievement standards. Criteria for Selecting Students • Student has been identified as an ELL • Student has been identified as having one or more of the existing categories of disabilities under IDEA (e.g.; intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, etc.) • Student is participating in alternate curriculum and in state-wide alternate accountability assessments • IEP team recommended the assessment after considering all three criteria above WIDA Consortium
Who should administer Alternate ACCESS for ELLs? • Trained test administrators: • Must be licensed/certified teacher or staff. • Must have familiarity with the student and the student’s response and communication style. WIDA Consortium
