  1. Mini-lecture sur la grammaire(La deuxième) Présentée parMegan Brown

  2. L’impératif • On utilisel’impératif pour… • - Giving orders • - Making suggestions • - Expressing desires • - Offering advice • - Making recommendations

  3. Des exemples • Fermez la porte– Close the door • Chantonsmaintenant! – Let’s sing now! • Ayez la bonté de penser à moi – Be kind enough to think of me • Veuillezm’excuser– Please excuse me • Ne parle pas! – Don’t speak!

  4. Imperative Conjugation • -ER verbs • The tu, nous, and vous forms are the only ones used for the imperative. • Nous and vous are the same in the imperative and the present tense. • Tu is the same, minus the final ‘s’. (Unless ‘y’ or ‘en’ follows – Vas-y! Parles-en.) • Parler: • Tuparle!Nous parlons! • Vousparlez!

  5. Exceptions… • Some –ir verbs are conjugated like –er verbs in the impératifbecause in the present tense, the tu form ends in –es. • Par exemple: • Ouvrir: Tuouvre! Nous ouvrons! Vousouvrez! • Souffrir: Tusouffre! Nous suffrons! Voussouffrez! • (Note: Not all imperative verbs require an exclamation point. I use them to differentiate between tenses. )

  6. Imperative Conjugation • -IR, -RE verbs • All regular and most irregular –irand –re verbs are the same in the present and the impératif. • Finir: Tu finis! Nous finissons! Vousfinissez! • Exceptions: Verbs conjugated like –er verbs, andthese four irregular verbs: avoir, être, savoir, vouloir

  7. Negative Commands • Pour faire un ordrenégatif, ajoutez les mots ‘ne’ et ‘pas’ (ou un autre mot de votrechoix) commeça: • N’ouvrepas la fenêtre! • Netelèvepas! • Ne le faisjamais!

  8. Reflexive Commands • In positive commands, the reflexive pronouns me and tebecome the stressed pronouns moi and toi. • Donne-le-moi! • Lève-toi! • Dis-moi! • Other examples of word order: • Expliquons-la-leur! • Envoie-le-nous! • Donnez-nous-en! • Faites-m’ypenser. (Remind me about it.)

  9. Negative Expressions • Here are some examples of ways to negate a sentence: • (Not yet) Ne…pas encore: Elle n’estpas encore arrivée. • (Nowhere) Ne…nulle part: Je nel’aitrouvénulle part. • (Only) Ne…que: Il n’estqu’unchien. • (Not at all) Ne…pas du tout: Tun’aimespas du tout le chocolat. C’est bizarre!

  10. Negation with only ‘pas’ • Pas can also be used by itself for informal negation: • Tu en veux? Oui, maispas beaucoup. • (Do you want some? Yes, but not a lot.) • Pourquoipas? (Why not?) • Pas mal. (Not bad.) • Passivite! (Not so fast!) • Ah non! Pasça! (Oh no! Not that!) • Tuviens, oupas? (Are you coming or not?)
